Renewed Faith in Gibson:

You know what the bridge and tailpiece settings are on your Luthier built LPC so use that as a guide. Now obviously your SG is out of sorts so when you look at your guitar look at the string height action,if its acceptable check the neck relief. Finger on first fret low E and another finger down the neck maybe the 15th fret or so.now if the neck relief is acceptable then you take a look at the tailpiece and make a assesment. now if the string action seems high envission in your head if you lowered it to were you like where would that put the tailpiece. so ya i hope its a good one you get.

20170505_084015.jpg Ok these are SG JR slab tops and not a Lester but they still have to get the slight neck angle right. So JR#1 tailpiece hight 20170505_084015.jpg

well,

I might not be able to do that because the Replica has an ABR-1 which allows a lower tailpiece height.

Looks about right on the replica Robert.Look at those big bridge studs. Heavy duty.

My Luthier friend said that he prefers the big studs. The only reason t use the tiny, Gibson studs would be to try and fool people, which was not my goal on this build...

So, my plan is to break this new Gibson Gold Top into sections and evaluate each section separately:

1. Basic Construction/Fit/Finish/Appearance

2. Action/Relief/Intonation/Tailpiece/Bridge Height

3. Electronics/Quietness/Tone/Volume Balance/Tone/Volume Control Spectrum

4. Feel/Playability/Balance

Now, several guys with more Gibson experience than me have told me to expect the guitar to need a full and comprehensive setup, right off the hangar, but I guess we will have to wait and see???

Breaking into sections it will be hard to play . Bro I think your overthinking this whole deal and having pretty high expectations myself.
If it where a Rolex yes should be perfect a Lambo yes perfect a guitar that depends. Now Man I have bought and had and sold so damn many over the last few years and every damn one needed a setup I had hell with my Sg diablo premium plus top but once dialed in it was nice playing.
My 2014 V Johnny can tell ya it was driving me batty getting just right I gave in had it pro setup and its fine now . My Lp traditional plaintop
was the only Gibson regardless of price that had a great setup right out the case. Did you Take that Mustang all part and inspect it with a fine tooth comb
are just drive it when you got it ? I say get the guitar play it awhile get it pro setup if need be and go from there.

Oh it will get played no doubt....and I do intend to critique it and see where it lands on the scale, so to speak....Lamborghini isn't perfect either...:-)

My plan is to give you a snapshot into whatever I encounter with this Gold Top.

Uhhhh....I kinda did a major inspection right away...spark plugs, race tune, muffler deletes, 4.10 gears, a .037" orifice tube to get the A/C vent temp down to freezing, new tires and ZR rated tires.... :-)

And that's my daily driver....that's what happens when you grow up driving stock cars.... :-)

Hopefully this will be a good gold top experience.

I know guitars are not perfect. I can do a setup if needed, but I do not want to revisit the buzzing electronic problems I had with the SG.

I have no intention of changing out the 498T/490R if they don't buzz. The tone can be EQ'd as long as the pickups are quiet and not muddy.

I also have no intention of swapping out the PCB. I think my SG was just a lemon. The other PCB equipped Gibson's I played sounded great.....

This has been a very unexpected turn of events.

I was really pleased with the Les Paul Custom Replica, but Mom expressed so much interest in it that I couldn't help but give it to her....the way she gave me her 1959 Silvertone in 1974.

It was then that I began considering the 2016 Gibson Les Paul 50's Tribute (not the 2017) that I had played at Guitar Sinner, but it was already gone.

Then Gibson contacted me regarding my letter and eventually I get hooked up with their Artist Relations Department, and the next thing you know, I got a satin 2016 gold top coming.

I will be presenting Mom the Les Paul Custom Replica next weekend and she already has plans to perform with it that Sunday at her church.... :-)
