Renewed Faith in Gibson:

WOOHOOOOOOO

I was about to say DO IT---but ya done DID IT!

Love the GOLD .....thats cool as fook ...congrats

The purchase is being handled through a local Gibson retailer, so I will be able to actually put hands on this guitar before I walk out with it.

Dude, I kind of know what "red flags" to look for now (neck angle/tailpiece height) and not get all caught up in the "honeymoon period" of NGD. I could have bought anything they had through the performing artist's program, but I just wanted a working guitar and the deciding factor for me was the neck dimensions. I play better and more efficiently on the wider/thicker neck. This model has the same dimensions as my 2016 Gibson SG Traditional neck, which I really do prefer. This model also has the 498T which I have played and was really impressed with. It also, like all other new Gibson's, has the PCB, but I have played several new ones with a PCB and it was not an issue as far as tone is concerned....

Good to hear on a few points there Robert. The thread title for one, your conversation with Gibson & of course, the incoming goldtop. Hope that its everything you're looking for. Looking forward to pics. Cheers

Thanks, Ivan...

I'm not a Gibson hater, I am just very vocal about paying ANY amount, (in this case the 2016 SG T Series was only $800USD,) for a quality Gibson, and then be forced to either return it (the wiser choice that I failed to make, and yet should not have had to consider in the first place) or spend around another$250USD to make it a useable studio guitar.

Having said that, I chose to correct the SG's issues and turned it into a very nice playing guitar.

The Goldtop purchase was not one of impulse. I had been looking at them locally, played several extensively, and other than not being dazzled by the satin Goldtop finish, loved the tone and features.

I'm very optimistic this will be a better experience. I will report once it's ready for pickup...probably Wednesday.

On a side note, I have no major modification plans for this Goldtop. I have found no fault with the PCB and 489T in the other 2016 50's Tributes I have played, so I see no reason to rip it out. I would like to think my 2016 Gibson SG was just a "Lemony" version of an otherwise great old standard Gibson.

First thing will be an off the hangar inspection with measurements posted, followed by a video or two. I plan on playing it a few weeks 9and having the band play it too) before I ever make ANY changes, including strings. I feel like this way we can honestly evaluate it.

I do plan on installing a brass jackplate, as I just think they are better, although some say its better to let the plastic one get sacrificed, but them you run the risk of wiring/PCB damage. I also have a Faber Aluminum Tailpiece I plan to install at the first string change, but that's it....

A good story well told Robert.
Faced with the choice I would have always said black before gold top, but seeing the pics side by side the gold top really caught my eye!
Who'd have thought that I would ever start to like gold tops? Age does funny things!
Nice choice on your new guitar. :dood:

Dude! Me too...I have always been a black guitar fan, but there was something about the gold top...something I cannot explain, that drew me to it...

There's really nothing wrong with the PCB. The only reason to change it out is if you want 50's wiring. If anything, the large ground plane of the circuit board offers some measure of shielding, even though the cavity isn't shielded. I haven't seen the later variants of the circuit board, but developing it with small DIP switches to switch between modern or 50's style wiring would be a good idea. Cheers

Hey, Ivan...Good morning...

I read that some models have these DIP switches, but I cannot recall which ones....

Excellent news because I want a full write-up appraisal, please. I am possibly gonna pull the trigger on a 2016 60's tribute this week, so as much feedback as you can give the better. :D

If I am not mistaken, that's got the slim taper neck and soapbars???

You, Sir, are correct. I'm hoping the neck is similar to my 2011 SG.

Yep...slim taper
Thickness at Fret 1: 0.800"
Thickness at Fret 12: 0.875"

What model variant is your 2011 SG??? Most SG's have the thicker "50's Rounded Profile" listed above.

Take some measurements.

I got a 2015 DT SG complete tone garbage. In my 48 years of playing guitar I have found very few guitars that bite back as I call it that inspire me. Or to say that once I start playing it hours go by
Like a time warp. For those that are into Jimi Hendrix read this on his Marshall amps Jimi Hendrix' Gear and Mods at West Coast Organ and Amp - Metropoulos Forum
I own one of the 1967 Marshall Super tremolo amps that was modified like Jimmi's. I'm in the posses of restoring it now.
