Naturally, the Danes stick with the Norwegians!
Today's Norwegian lecture:
The main written Norwegian language, bokmål (we've got two written languages; "bokmål" meaning "book language", and "nynorsk" meaning "new Norwegian") is based on written Danish. We were under Danish rule from 1380 until 1814. Nynorsk is based on different Norwegian dialects and was constructed by the linguist Ivar Aasen in the mid 1800s. Bokmål and nynorsk are really quite close, and it's not like people don't understand one or the other. About 85-90 % of the population use bokmål as their preferred written language.
Note that bokmål and nynorsk are written languages, nobody speaks one or the other. Norwegian has a ton of different dialects, but none of them match any of the written languages completely.
