Renewed Faith in Gibson:

Not long ago, I wrote a rather eloquent and detailed letter to Gibson regarding the negative experience I encountered on my 2016 SG. I referenced the nearly identical problems encountered on my 2003 SG and how disappointed I was that a musician, at any level of proficiency, would be faced with the type of quality control issues I have encountered.

Additionally, I stated that as a BMI registered and working recording artist, I have "lost faith in Gibson's ability to create an instrument that is consistent in quality with what we have historically come to expect from Gibson."

Quite surprisingly, I got a call yesterday from a Gibson representative involved in Artist Relations in response to my letter.

While I was asked to keep specific details of our conversation in confidence, I believe that I can attest to the following, none of which is a direct quotation, but all of which is factual.

Gibson seems to be aware that there are some problems with regard to quality control and they are working holistically to correct those issues and improve the reputation and quality of Gibson products.

So, I suffice to say that it appears that Gibson is indeed listening to the voice of the "little guy" and, quite likely, browsing some forums as well.

There was much more to our discussion, but those details involved artist relations matters specifically, which I was asked to keep in confidence.

So, perhaps we will see a marked improvement in Gibson musical instrument quality in the very near future....and you just might see me with a new Gibson very soon.

Thats good to hear Robert.I love Gibsons myself and really hope they stay around and make some great geetars.I cant afford most of them lol but i just love the ES 335 Cherry Red guitar.its my dream guitar.

Last Gibson I bought new was in 2012. Worthless. Sold it as fast as I could. Personally, I'd never buy a Gibson made after 1990 or so. After that they simply cranked out junk that I wouldn't own on a dare.

If I want a "Gibson-like" instrument I'll buy an Epiphone. At least they still produce good instruments in spite of being associated with the junk peddlers from Tenn.

The above is my opinion on things and if another is more brand loyal, more power to em.

I do too, Johnny Goo...I grew up playing the 1979 Les Paul Custom and others. I really disappointed me to have so much trouble with 2 brand new Gibson's.

We never had troubles with our old Gibson's....

That's great news, Robert!!!

So, did you give Gibson the URL to this forum?

I mean, suppose...let's just suppose...that I was to make the comment that Gibson is my favorite guitar company...and that a Gibson was my first "real" electric guitar...and that I think Gibson makes the best-looking guitars ever...and that an iced-tea Les Paul Axcess would be the absolutely perfect guitar to play at my next gig?

What do you think the over/under is on someone at Gibson actually reading that?

You realize I ask merely out of innocent curiosity!

LOL!

I'm not sure, Man. My guess is that Gibson is intelligent enough to have market analysts that would be watching and reporting on comments both good and bad...kind of like private companies and Yelp reviews. I didn't mention this forum per se, or any other forum by name. Quite honestly, I really try hard to just listen in situations like this, as I have a tendency to talk (and type) way too much...

I am glad to see you got a response that satisfied you and that the "G" is listening --- which means.....our RANTS are not falling on deaf ears and CHANGE and improvements may just HAPPEN.........of course if we just continue to be silent and claim ALL gibsons are good carte blanche then how does that help any of us---- any of the new buyers----- or the company itself????????

Good on ya Robert for reaching out direct to the man and giving him your experiences.

Well done.

Very professional and impressive on both parties.

I agree. I just won't spend a fortune anymore on guitars. I used to be that way. Now, it's about finding the ones that have a certain something, ya know???

Well, I was upset with my 2016 SG purchase, basically a repeat of my 2003 SG purchase, but I didn't blast them like a Neanderthal. I did two years in law school, so I am able to write a clear and convincing letter that doesn't come off as an attack. I also included all my emails between Nicholas Chemsak and myself from the 2003 SG purchase.

I think that being registered as a performing artist with BMI, and writing a well thought out complaint, and referencing many other sources where retail customers have had a similar experience, is the correct way to express one's opinion. These days, I think all businesses pay attention to the forums and Yelp reviews, etc.

I have always dug Gibson's because I grew up playing them. When I was a kid, there were Les Paul's leaned up in every corner of the house. Mom received a few things through her recording contracts and also other players who had sponsorships would give her their "old stuff" when the new stuff rolled in, so I guess I got used to the quality of those instruments....

Gibson can make their guitars like they used too. It's entirely possible, and they DO get a lot of their guitars right the first time....we know this from the reviews and even the experiences of our forum members, but even at the $799.00 entry level Gibson, the setup, electronics and quality should equal OR EXCEED other competitor's instruments. Much of the time, they do. It's unfortunate when they don't.

I do not think for a minute that my letter will change the world. In fact, I am quite certain that's not the only similarly themed letter they have received...

I'm shopping for a brand new Gibson as we 'speak,' so to speak....

Ok,

So what I have learned, through much testing and evaluation, is I love the clubby Gibson neck. My 2016 SG T Series has it. It's referred to as the "50s Rounded Profile." I measured my SG and then looked up the specs and actually found the numbers...

Thickness at Fret 1: 0.818"
Thickness at Fret 12: 0.963"
Width 1.695" @ nut, 2.260" @ end of board

This is different from the "slim taper" 1960;s neck and what Gibson does NOT post is the string spacing is narrower at the but on the slim taper neck. I don't like the slim taper necks with the 'crowded' string spacing at the nut. I have huge hands (I wear an XXXXL=14 glove) and I struggle to get clean open chords on them. Often, I get a harmonic generated by my fingernail contacting the adjacent strings, so the fat neck is what I want.

The only Gibson that really moved me in actual hands-on playing was the 2016 (NOT 2017) Les Paul 50's Tribute. It has the fat neck and the open bobbin 498T, both of which I really like. Finishes are kind of boring, satin black or gold with no binding, but I think this guitar would give me the pickup output, neck profile and LP tone that I like....

I recently fondled a 50s trib with 2 P90's --- I liked it and I normally do not like the fat necks.....it was very nice and played well. no issues.
I also played a Les Paul Jr 100 anv. thing with Les on the back giving the Hail Hitler and the ROBOTUNERS......AND the zero nut thing

ALL THE STUFF other HATED......honestly --- I tried to talk the guy out of it --- I would have one in heart beat it was very nice. dog ear P90 ....rawk monster
are string changes a pain well yes--- but WTF I am not a pro I dont need a 38 second string change....I can take 38 hours--- or 38 days if I want---

I need to cal that guy again see if he wants Roberts SG
Hey Robert you will just forward the SG to my friend Paul=--- then he can send me the Lester---that works eh?

While your at it get yourself a new Gibbo would ya

LOL!!!

I have a love-hate relationship with the SG...

New Gibby....I've decided which one I want, but I am still tossed up on the color...I like the Black one minute and the Gold top the next...can't decide...

I kinda made a deal with my Mom...She stresses a lot...When we visit, her blood pressure is always lower even without meds...and she really liked how my SG played, and her only electric is the 1959 Silvertone and it's hard to fret, high action, etc, plus she is getting arthritis in her hands, so an easier-to-fret guitar would help her a lot....she won't play the 1979 Les Paul Custom for fear of damaging it, and the slim-taper neck on my Les Paul Custom Replica might even be easier for her to fret, so I told her I would pick up myself a new Les Paul and send her the replica, fully completed with all the new hardware, gold strap locks, custom strap (she already has my student's Marshall MG50 to use for practice and on her church's worship team) but ONLY if she promises to play everyday and send me cell phone clips to prove it...

Dude, seriously, I can't decide on color...Satin Black or Satin Gold....
