Project Carvin V-16: Morphing from PCB to Point To Point Turret Board

The new cab from Guitar Cabinets Direct just got delivered, and me likey. The tolex color is Ocean Sparkle. The grill cloth is Fender-style Blue/White/Silver. I still have to drill the chassis bolt holes through the cab and the chassis:

I might change the color of the chickenhead knobs. I might change the grill cloth too. But for now, I need to let this cab off-gas in our garage for a couple days. When I opened up the clear plastic bag that the cab was protected with, I was blown away by how strong the fumes where.

Beautiful. So one of a kind in so many ways.
That thing will stand proudly in a sea of black, tan & tweed.
Great choice on the blue sparkle.
 
Regarding this cab: To my surprise, I didn't know that a Fender Princeton Reverb cab has its speaker location offset towards the input side of the chassis. The pics at Guitar Cabinets Direct clearly show the speaker location is centered. This offset speaker location might turn out to be a good thing, though. It should enhance the balance of the amp when carrying, and should provide some extra clearance between the speaker and output transformer.

Yes, thanks... Definitely going with the "one of a kind" theme. But the color is called ocean sparkle. The ocean sparkle is more turquoise than the blue sparkle.

In fact, the other grill cloth color I'm seriously considering is the Fender-style Turquoise/White/Silver, which was not available as an option through GCD, but is an option at Mojotone.

Well, this project has thrown me another curve ball... :BH:

Yesterday I finally decided to start lining up the chassis, the 12" speaker, and the reverb tank to the cab. The output transformer barely clears the back of the speaker cone by 1/4". I thought that there was going to be at least a whole inch of clearance. So much for my lazy math... :oops:. I'm very uncomfortable with that tight clearance. I do have the option to move the OT a 1/2" further away from the speaker, but I'll have to slightly lift the main board to access one of the newly drilled mounting holes. Which also means disconnecting and reconnecting a butt-load of the leads to the pots and some grounding points.

I try really hard to visualize and preplan for situations like this. Many times I end up asking myself: "WhyTF didn't I think of that?" :BH::BH::BH::BH::BH:
 
Would a new speaker baffle board, with the speaker centered/moved, solve the issue without creating other issues?

No, because it will create other issues. What I recently found out in regards to the design of the Fender Princeton Reverb cab: A normal Princeton Reverb combo comes equipped with a 10" speaker, which is also centered on the baffle board. However if a 12" speaker is desired, then the larger speaker has to be offset towards to the input inside to clear the OT. If the 12" speaker was centered it would have less clearance or none at all. It's really tight in there with the larger speaker. I wouldn't be having this issue with a 10" speaker, but I wanted to continue using my 12" Weber Blue Dog ceramic, which is a very nice speaker. Live and learn, right?

I thought about rotating the board too. But doing so will move the speaker a 1/4" higher, but 4 5/8" to the left. I might gain a tiny bit more of clearance, but it might be more of an effort that moving the OT a 1/2" further back which would surely create more clearance than manipulating the baffle board.

If you look at following pics where "X (b)" is marked, that would be the estimated point where the OT gets at its closest to the cone:

Plus, I want to cut out that extra piece of trim that is there as a foundation for the Fender logo:

Well, I just got through drilling out the chassis mounting holes through the cab and chassis, and it all lines up very nice and even. To install the speaker, the chassis has to be removed. With speaker and chassis installed, there's officially a 1/2" of clearance between the OT and speaker cone. I'm thinking that this should be good enough unless someone else knows better. I could still move the OT a 1/2" further back, and that would up the clearance a whole inch.

you could run a polarity check on the speaker, with a 9volt battery, and run it through it’s full travel in both directions...to see just how close the cone comes to the OT at full travel.

Thanks, Youbastarddon… I just tried that, and all's good... :woohoo:. But before I read your post, I fired-up the amp and noodled around for about 30 minutes. From cleans to means, and everything in betweens… This little mishmash of amps parts just kicks some buttocks!
