Help! I Need To Get Fuzzy….

I love my Tonebender style fuzz of the Fulltone Soul Bender V2. Not sure if something like that is what you’re looking for. BYOC and AION FX have DIY clone kits of Tonebenders. However, AION’s Penumbra (clone kit of ZVEX Wooly Mammoth/Mastrodon) is very interesting… Especially in the hands of RJ Ronquillo:

@Ghostman , you forgot to link your demo!
Holy smokes @Ghostman ! How could you have left that demo out! I’m gonna have to revisit it later today, but the bit I watched on the tablet was impressive! That’s the stuff! Having the mix controls is a HUGE plus for me! I’m always happy when I can bounce something between guitar and bass! I don’t always like an “all fuzz” bass signal…a blend is usually more desired there.
Thanks @ibmorjamn for enlightening us!

I'm thinking of ordering this kit since Greg posted his new build
I have never built a kit anything and have a Peak atlas DCA 75 Pro transistor tester

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the input! It gives me direction in my quest! And may help future generations ;) :dood:

Sweet!!! I really enjoy listening to those guys a lot…I’d appreciate the pic’s, and knowledge! They touch on the fuzz sound/style I’m interested in…often.

I am tempted by the other offer too! That’s very kind of you sir!
Many of the guitar sounds on the first CD are from my Hiwatt. Most of the Roadsaw records too. Plus pedals, of course.

I do have a local Portland built fuzz called a Daisy Cutter but I have not done decent review. Mainly because I don't have a weaker output single coil set installed yet.
The pickups arrived but I have a pickgaurd on the way for them.
Same guy builds a germanium/ tone bender style. I am trying to get my hands on.

Wow! Yeah, they were all on rotation in the lab yesterday…I didn’t get to the “Kind” stuff…I started off the morning with some early “Sleep”…
I am really looking forward to some pic’s from that show though!

So, I wanted to touch base, and say that I haven’t dropped my quest for fuzz. I took some info from @SG John , and ran with it…even though it’s a version a pedal that I’ve already built a version of, which should do what the one John spotted does, but it’s more compact, and actually on the pedal boards of both of the guitarists from a band that I referenced. Turns out it is definitely what they use often for lead runs. It is the Dunlop Gypsy Fuzz…

This is, essentially, an Octavia Fuzz pedal….without the octave circuit. The first pedal I ever built was an Octavia clone that I could switch the octave circuit “out” of. An excellent, spitty, ripped speaker, type of fuzz.

Next up…This one caught my eye recently. I watched a few demo’s of it, and was impressed…beefy to ratty…this thing covers a lot of ground. Then came the clincher for me… There are a bunch of demo’s for this pedal with bass, and they sound pretty darned good! Kinda like my surprise the first time I engaged my homebrew Rat pedal on my bass. Since it’s not a Muff based fuzz, I went for one. I’m still getting the hang of it…undecided…haven’t had a chance to run a bass through it yet. I like a few settings I’ve tried so far. I will make some time this weekend to run it some more. It is the Death By Audio “Fuzz War”.

I really liked the one suggested by @Ghostman …killer sound….but the only version I can find has an upside down bloody crucifixion depicted on the face…this is not my thing…I’d much prefer the 420 cannabis version(like his), but that was a limited run, and there aren’t many for sale. I’d take one of the goat head versions, but I’m guessing they’re older. But definitely the “Deluxe” (6 knobs, 2 toggles, 2 footswitches)versions, with the extra clipping option, that’s the ticket….eyes open for one.
The only Fuzz I've ever enjoyed playing through: Abominable Pedals Hail Satan/Cannabis.

I’ve also cleaned up the switch on my homebrew, tarted up, muff variant. I love that pedal immensely, and it’s staying with me as long as I can keep it running. I’ll play around a bit, and see if I come up with something to show for this quest.
Thanks everyone!

Let me know if you want this one to try out. I can send it over to you for a test run.

Ooooh! @Ghostman ….I paid a visit to abominable’s site….they have a preorder up for some different artwork on the Deluxe. Perhaps I’ll drink enough beer this weekend to throw my hat in on one. I know it’s a (couple of) ”Muff variant”…but it adds the extra clipping option, and a mix function. I’m thankful that you pointed it out!

Some stuff on a board tonight…

From left to right, bottom row: CryBaby Jr(received today), Fuzz War, my homebrew Muff variant, Gypsy Fuzz, an awesome Treble Booster.
Also ran: TC Flashback X4, TC Sub n Up, NS2.
”The brutality of tearing flesh” is what comes to mind with this stuff running through the homebrew 18 watt superlite-ish head into a WGS ET65 loaded 1X12.
The mid sized Wah works pretty well.

@Ghostman …I’ve had enough tonight...I’ve placed a preorder for the new run…black background…
Your demo was awesome! Can’t resist!….
Also…ordered a TC Sentry noise gate…true bypass…buffer can be defeated. I’m hoping that it’s a step up from the good old NS2…and it plays well with the fuzz…time will tell. Stay tuned!

My initial thought when I read the title was that someone needs to learn to put the razor away, and stop manscaping. Now it makes more sense though.

I have a Warm Audio Foxy, but that should be fairly similar to your Octavia. It sounds good, but there’s no need to spend that money as the Danelectro French Toast is basically the same circuit for a fraction of the price.

I also have a Fuzz Face mini that I modded with some NOS transistors. It sounds good now, but I’m no fan of the Fuzz Face minis, I’ve had too many that were just meh.

The best Fuzz I ever had, and that I sold like an idiot, was a Mooer Grey Faze. It sounded great, especially with the volume rolled off a bit.

Not much help, I know. And that’s my experience with Fuzz pedals exhausted. There was one that I really listed for, but that’s just too expensive. The JAM Fuzz Phrase. I’m not spending $500 on a pedal though.

An update on the board tonight…no new fuzz….not until I get the Abominable Electronics pedal in. That will be a few weeks yet.

New since last time…

Lower right: TC Spark Mini clean boost. I’ve had this for years. It’s certainly NOT the Awesome Treble Booster I had on there before, but it’s tiny, simple, and keeps things as fat as without it…just louder, and more “pushed”.

Upper right: TC Sentry noise gate. I just got this in tonight. It’s “true bypass”, and definitely plays better than the NS2 with the fuzz. Playing around with just the knobs got me into acceptable territory. This thing is supposed to be quite deep, and dialable, in the TonePrint editor. I haven’t taken the plunge just yet. I did try it “in line” after the fuzz and wah…it was ok at best there. I moved the boost, fuzz, and wah, into the loop…that’s where it stepped ahead of the NS2. No noticeable “tone suck”, and much more effective function. Happy.

I was excited for the gate coming today, and some friends at work wanted to hear what I’ve been excited about…I often look forward to unwinding with a little Fuzz War jam after a stressful workday, and today was one of those days…so I sent them this:

…via text tonight. Nothing fancy. Just two mic’s. My new Sennheiser e609, and the FatHead ribbon(out a couple of feet). The FatHead is too gain-hungry for the interface preamp… Bummer.
Good time though…and you can hear the gate working.

Hahaha that was awesome! Came in all clean and melodic before addressing the camera. Then the decibel meter in the back began having a conniption fit from the fuzz assault lol
