DOC’s Studio Build…

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO many places to hide the bodies...............LOVE that place .....

you might want to coat the dirt with "damp-rid" helps soak up the blood and odors -- though you are using clear plastic judiciously -- well done ;)

Started to remove the original HVAC ducts (those big black tubes) that supply heat to the ground level living room floor above. I'm going to replace them with rectangular 3 1/4 x 10 steel ducts that will be screwed to the ceiling. Those will then be covered by Mass Loaded Vinyl, then covered with 3" of Rockwool Safe and Sound which will then be enclosed in a 1" pine U shaped structure. That then gets covered with 2 sheets of 5/8" drywall. This is where most of the sound could "leak" into the living room, so it needs a lot of sound deadening materials.

The HVAC duct will run over to the wall with all the pipes and make a right turn and extend the length of that wall and exit into a closet space where the furnace is. I still need to build the air gaped wall in front of those pipes. There will be about an 8" air gap and then the 2x4 wall built on 24" centers and stuffed with the Rockwool S&S.

Completed the framing and electric work in the mud room. Waiting for the door to be delivered from Home Depot. Ordered it over a month ago and it was scheduled to be delivered on June 1. Kept checking the website and it said “out for delivery”. Finally got a hold of a real person at HD and she said, looks like we misplaced getting it actually scheduled. It is now set for next Monday.

The build up floor, which I'm calling the basement, will have its own furnace and AC system. The floor plan below shows our current idea for a bathroom and bar area.

Do you plan on running any electrical wires adjacent to BBQs? :rolf:

Seriously, two words: Bass traps.
Traps make the biggest difference of all.
But seriously, use fire rated materials on all surfaces.

Keep all headphone cables, mic cables and electrical wiring separated as far as possible.

Those bassist traps aren’t big enough for Adrian to fit in :rolf: . I have Rockwool safe and sound in all the air gapped walls. Just finished the East wall today. The north wall was finished a while ago and I still have the south and west air gapped walls to build and insulate.

Headphone and mic cables will be run in 3” ABS pipes I have running under the floor.

The bass traps will make the biggest difference not only in acoustics but also in the sound proofing.
Square corners create standing waves and the trap stops that from happening. Oh it works, it's pretty impressive.
It's not a bad idea to fill the under floor space with sand.
You basically want to avoid any type of lighting that has a ballast or a transformer (like fluorescent) to keep the electrical noise lower.

Oh, staple the wire 6 inches or less from the J box.

Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV), anybody install this before? I have five 4ftx12ft rolls to install on the ceiling. This stuff is 1lb per sq ft, so each roll weights almost 50 pounds :run: , I was going to cut them into 4’x4‘ squares (16 pounds) and screw them with #8 screws with washers and then vinyl tape the seems.

I haven’t installed it, but the studio we built in LA they had installed something very similar on the walls , not part of our scope of work, but then we put a 1/4” thick like vaneer over it, kind of like a door skin.

And we had to install isolation blocking in the attic for the fire sprinklers to come through.
The blocks all had ( motor mount looking thing screwed to them , then fastened to the ceiling joists.
Cheers

truly NO ONE WILL HEAR YOU SCREAM...............................................(whats that address again???? ;) ;) )

My place is circled in yellow. There is no one for miles to the north and west of us. We are at the end of a cul de sac and the west side of our property borders the San Bernardino National forest. Also, the lot to the north and the lot to the east of us is not built on either.

Installed my first HVAC ducting today in the shop. The first floor register is on the right and the duct work goes across the shop and makes a 90 degree turn. It will then follow that wall on the left out of the shop into a closet where the furnace is. This is the same dust work that I’ll use in the studio. This get covered with mass loaded vinyl, then covered with 3 inch Rockwool Safe and Sound and then encased in a 1” pine box. All joints are screwed and taped.
