Uncovered pickups in an LP

I can put up with most anything when it comes to looks if the guitar is a player. I like beautiful guitars but as long as the guitar is a player I don't spend much time worrying about how it looks.

I agree that functionality comes first, but remember, I am putting this together and I have a certain amount of options.

That is the WHITE WITCH and now resides very Happily with SIx String ;)
(was one of the best feeling and playing SG's I have EVER laid hands on regardless of name/pedigree)

The little SG Special I snagged for like 40.00 --- it was a "beater" and a test mule (had several pickup combos in and out of it) but was a solid good little player

I'd install the pickups I thought would give me the tone I was looking for. That said, a lot of tone we hear is in our heads so looks would definitely play a part. I like maple fretboard Telecasters. Blindfolded I doubt I could hear any difference yet I've never played a rosewood Telecaster I liked.

I have enough guitars that I have almost every conceivable tone covered. The challenge is really to come up with something different!

Referencing the OP, to me the question of covered or uncovered pickups on a Les Paul is somewhat of a case-by-case situation.

On a Les Paul Custom, I think uncovered would look out of place. On a traditional or standard, to me, it depends on the color. A typical sunburst (a la Ace Frehley) does look good with either covered or uncovered. A Les Paul Studio can use either one. My Les Paul Studio project would look good with uncovered black pickups, even though I'm going to use gold covered p'ups.

In general, I think lighter colors of Les Pauls look better with uncovered pickups than darker colors.

I agree that functionality comes first. But, I do admit to putting a fair amount of thought into aesthetics.
