Been working in the background on a new forum Game/Event for TTR.
Want to utilize what I've learned from previous community games I've mismanaged, break some new ground too.
RiffMasters will be a fair bit more guitar playing music-focused than Game of Toanz was. I'm trying to limit the requirement for Digital Audio Workstation prowess (because I don't have too much of that myself!) but players will require a way to post audio clips, and video clip ability would prove useful too, but not required. I will be taking part in the game as a player, but community votes via poll votes will be the basis of judging round winners, similar to what you've seen here before. Recording/ multi-track skills will prove helpful, or use a looper type pedal.
My hope is we use RiffMasters as a way/reason to develop new skills, and put a little pressure on ourselves to create in fun, new, rewarding ways.
The Ten Main Challenges of the game will test your musical prowess: forming riffs, adapting riffs, styles, arrangements, alternate covers etc.
For each main level, you'll have FIVE weeks to post a clip. See it as a more relaxed, somewhat leisurely game, maybe you'll even say it's easy!
But bank on there being some last-minute panic due to human nature. Clips submitted must be minimum 1 minute long, but no maximum.
That's hardly nothing! A minute goes by VERY fast! How hard could it be? You'll have plenty of time to develop, rehearse, record.
RiffMasters is points-based. You earn points via ten main challenges, first player to reach 100 points wins. As you gain points to move up the ladder, you'll earn new badges to wear. If nobody manages to make 100 points inside the first 10 challenges, more challenges will be added.
To level the playing field there will be also be ten sub-challenges available ONLY to the two players with least points in any given round - (excepting the first guitar duel, which will introduce everyone to the format). Guitar Duel Sub-challenges take place while we are waiting for the main challenge submissions to be completed.
There will be points for every participant, on EVERY challenge, as long as an honest attempt at a submission is made before the deadline.
All TTR Members are welcome to drop in/out of RiffMasters at will to compete and collect points, but only players who register now before RiffMasters officially begins will be eligible to take part in the many Guitar Duel Challenges, an important part of the game, offering many more chances to grow your points.
The very first BRAVE TTR Member to sign up for RiffMasters in this thread below, (other than myself) will earn the early advantage to Challenge
the registered player of his choice to a Guitar Duel, and receive the honour and surprise of choosing the very first mystery challenge.
Note: Guitar Duels are basically FUN challenges. Nobody is expecting anyone to be Petrucci, or whatever. The challenges are designed so anyone
can take an honest stab at it, (if they dare). The community will award the most entertaining / creative guitar duel combatant the win. But, even if
you lose a challenge, as long as you make an honest try via your submission, you'll still be awarded important participation points! How cool is that?
Challenge another player to a duel then weasel out? That will not stand, man!
Get challenged but then run away like a yella guitar-totin' poser/coward? There will be repercussions.
If penalties are somehow required, they'll be voted on by the registered players playing. All general Tone Rooms forum rules also apply.
We will play RiffMasters under our regular screen names. Good-natured trash talk and braggadocio is fully allowed even encouraged, but be prepared to give and take and laugh like crazy. Let's all encourage our forum brothers in musical development, but also not let egos get the better of anyone. Remember we are all just regular dudes here, trying to find some distractions and kicks, try some stuff, learn to play guitar a little gooder, and not kill any puppies.
I will be bumping this thread for recruitment for RiffMaster players for ONE WEEK. Remember, you must register below at the beginning of the game to be eligible for to take part in perhaps half the fun of the game... the Duels! There are a lot of very important points to be earned in the duels, points that can propel you unexpectedly towards the very top! BUT, again anyone can choose to play, and drop in and out of RiffMasters at will.
Oh, and the #1 Main Musical Challenge is called... "Opening Act"
Who's in? Lets see some names!
