I did software too. Wrote my first FORTRAN program in 1973 in high school. Made good money writing in C and assembly.
Wow...i should have got a real education, Man.
And i am saying that seriously...
I grew up working with Dad, so i knew i already had a job, plus i was making money with a guitar starting at age 15, so i kinda chuckled when guys talked about college.
When i enrollef in the police acdemy, in August of 1992, it was the first time i had been in any kind of educational setting since 1983 - the year i left high school. Although i graduated in the top 5 (out of 54 cadets) i still didn't plan for a life outside law enforcement.
I did two years in law school and left in 2009 to become my agency's 25th police chief. Big mistake. Too many politics.
I have always thought of myself as the dumbest, smart guy i know.
So, for me, I'm just a fool with a GED that was somehow blessed with being able to find a way through things without anything more than being able to read and write.
Now, the reality of those choices are catching up with me.
At 54, i dont think highly of going back to school and learning something new. I'm not social and certainly not politically correct, so.i see myself as a kind of dinosaur that would surely be passed over in the job field and i really don't have patience for that anymore.
I applied for Santa Fe a while back, just because i like trains and wanted to get out of music as a career. The guy just looked at me so strange and asked, "So, you are a musician full time and belong to a musician's union???"
I told him, yes, of course, but that my background in racing and fabrication gives me a strong mechanical aptitude. Needless to say, i didnt get hired.
My wife and i are blessed and happy, but i really wish i could do something else. Yrouble is, we've got used to the $$$$ and i can't help support us on a pay reduction.
Hope all is well for you guys...
