What Are Friends For??? - The Unintentional Creation of the'59 Gibson Les Paul Stage Guitar:

Robert--- thanks for the kind words--- and I am thrilled that this beastie will get to PERFORM as she would never have hidden away here in the doom room ---

The SG -- FEELS like an OLD friend -- thing is DEAD quiet--- till strummed -- makes GLORIOUS noises and feels like my first love -- a 70's era Gibson SG I scored in the 80's and drug around with me everywhere -- sadly it was lost to a car accident -- (lost its head--stock) and being a FOOL kid at the time I had no idea it COULD BE REPAIRED ----- :(
ugh

Thank you sir this thing will be much loved .

Soon, your "Chibby" will be touring the biker clubs and Casinos... :-)

And Mojave Wasteland Weekend 2019 if there is a cancellation...

While I normally take a very dim view of fakes, this, to me, is one benefit of a fake. If the guitar may be subject to harsh environments, theft, or other damage, you can still have the visual appeal of the real thing, while risking much less money doing it, especially if the fake is done well.

That's exactly the motivation for this project...and to be able to use the rest of the genuine Gibson goodies sent to me by Kevin Paul...

A few photos of what I'm doing.

Since this guitar will be used both live and in the studio, I wanted the same insane level of EFI/RFI protection I use on my other two Les Paul's.

To begin, i painted the entire inside of the guitar with GFS shielding paint. Using curved brushes and curved forceps, I was able to get 360° coverage in all wiring routes, which I verified with a borescope. However, even after several coats (2 hours between coats) I wasnt getting consistent continuity when spot checking the paint. So, I proceeded to fully shield the guitar with copper tape over the shielding paint.

All routes have 360° copper coverage and full continuity. Photos taken prior to completion.

Frets are done and just waiting on parts. Epiphone pickups are coming (14k bridge HB8N version of Gibson 498T) plus all new 550k/540k pots with push/pull tone pots, and of course, Dunlop Straplocks so all guitars use the same strap.

I'm building the wire harness from oxygen sensor wiring. Ultra high temp, the jacket doesn't melt when soldering and when bent, retains perfect shape. Comes in 5 colors too.

I am reaming the headstock to 10mm, which will allow me to use Kevin Paul's tuners (Gibson Green Keys) and the larger bushings (Kluson's) should cover the chips around the tuning peg holes.

I'll keep you updated.

Damn man like your workin on the Space Shuttle.

Here where we live in SoCal, guitars without shielding - every one of my Gibson's and some I repair for clients - will pick up and play radio stations and cell phone conversations. This is how I address the issue.

Every cavity in the guitar is first painted with conductive shielding paint. Then, copper tape is applied. Every inch of the routing between cavities is covered, including the backs of the covers themselves. This creates a 'Faraday Cage,' as the copper becomes part of the ground shield.

When done correctly, you can lay a cell phone on the guitar, while plugged in and at volume, and send texts and calls without the guitar transmitting or reacting to ANY interference.

Try that test sometime!!!!

Light dimmers, florescent lights, PC's all have zero effect on a guitar shielded this way.

There is 12 feet of copper in this guitar...
