What Are Friends For??? - The Unintentional Creation of the'59 Gibson Les Paul Stage Guitar:

How do you get the copper ALLLLLLL the way down in the long routes-----like the one to the switch????

Roll about a 1/4" of the backing off a 3/4" wide strip of copper tape and hole punch a hole in it. Tie a piece of fishing line into the hole, the slide the tape into the rout and position it evenly. Press the exposed end down to stick it in place.

Then, pull the backing towards you and press the tape down as you go. When you cant reach inside the rout, a piece of rubber fuel line can be used to smooth out the tape.

Started enlarging the not quite concentric holes for the Kluson 10mm conversion bushings. The holes were nearly .380" before they were straight. Bushings measure. 393" and I will be using about a .0045" interference fit:

I started with a 45° carbide burr to break the edge and prevent chipping the veneer and finish:

Next, the ardjourous task of getting the holes straight and creeping up on size. The tuner shoulders actually taper from .385" to .393", very nearly mimicking the taper of the reamer:

Here, the right side is on size:

Ahhh!!!!

The bushings are too long and contact the shoulder of the Gibson Green Keys. The Genuine Kluson's (Adrian got from a TTR member off a Gibson upgrade) and the Gibson Green Keys have a slightly different screw spacing too....

Gold Grovers are the only other tuners I have on hand...they would work but wouldn't look right....

Ok,

I am hesitant to drill multiple holes in a headstock. I discovered the mounting screw center-to-center distance on the Kluson's and the Gibson green keys are actually the same at 24.0mm. The difference is, because the Kluson's have a smaller diameter shoulder, they can be moved laterally in the headstock. The 'correct' tuner would have no shoulder, such as the Kluson Traditional #SD90SLN.
