To Scream or Not To Scream:

If you can get your hands on an original (made in USA) one do it. They were amazing. The new ones suck. I had an original one from around 1992 and eventually it died, so I immediately replaced it with what was supposed to be the same thing. It wasn't. Not close.

I have the RAT2; 2017 I think.
Never played a real one.

I had the Behringer TS, it was good, good and cheap to try; the case is pretty flimsy.
I have a TS-5 that I got used / broken repaired and modded it , is better.

I had the Behringer TS and Super Fuzz for sale at garage sale - both for $15.
Somebody got a deal - my wife sold them for $5. for the pair!!
My son got hold of the TS-5 and I have not seen it since.

I spent over one million on my amp building quest. My local Music store I do all the amp repairs and playing music in a band I save every cent
and buy my gear. When my local music store had the Marshall DSL'S for sale I thought cool they look good at that time I thought it would be
a great grab and go amp for the gigs we play. I asked the owner of the store if I could try them out Keith asked what guitar I wanted to use
I said I will go home and get one. I grabbed my best amp and guitar Then tried out a 15 40 and 100 DSL I spent 4 hours playing them
and could not get a good sound out of any of them then asked Keith if I could take the 15 DSL out of the cabinet and see if I could modify
it to sound better Keith said no. Then I played my amp Ward the guitar teacher at the store ran out to see how I was getting that sound.
I let Ward play my guitar and amp Ward said he had never played such a harmonically rich amp in his life and wanted to buy it I said
not for sale. Next day I brought in my 1968 Marshall Super Lead 100 12,000 series amp with a matching 1968 basket weave 4 12 cabinet
I tried the DSL amps in my 4 12 cabinet no good then played my Marshall then a customer in the store asked if I would sell my Marshall
I said $25,000.00 sold it was mint all NOS Genalex KT77 and B759 sounded like the voice of GOD.

Ahhhhh....the dream!!!!
If only my DSL40C could sound as sweet!!!!

The dream is not over just scored a NOS Drake 784-139 output transformer. From a friend across the pond in the EU.

Now I can restore my Marshall Park 75 100% original. The best sounding EL34 OPT ever made. But the Park uses KT88's

My best amp the Green Hornet has a 1968 Drake 784-139 OPT.

Am I correct in assuming that you really can't do much in the way of 'hot-rodding/modifying' the PCB amps, say for example, the DSL40C????

Robert I have had bad outcome with PCB amps transformers also the tubes now are cheap don't last
and the China made resistors and capacitors are total trash. I just re tubed my EF86 amp with NOS Mullard tubes $2200.00 I did get two extra EF86
1-EF86 3-12AX7 2-EL84 1-EZ81 sounds great but at what price. They are 10,000 hour tubes. Now tubedepot has a sale on EL34 tubes today
I need 12 each. EL34 Holland Made, Amperex Bugle Boy & Other Brands See why I'm leaning to a AX-EFX-3 and I can make IR files of my amps.
Will the AX-EFX sound as good as my amps I don't think so but close enough

I'm really shocked - to be totally honest - with how good the 1997 Marshall Valvestate sounds without any effects whatsoever...I'm not sure the 2016 Mrshall DSL40C would sound this good even with a tube screamer????

The best driven tones I ever got were out of a Randall tube amp - I tried many OD/distortion pedals and none of them improved (or even equalled) the sound.

I didn't like the TS9. The MXR M77 is more versatile and often cheaper.

I agree; I've had quite a lot of ODs, including the MXR77 and the TS808; the MXR sounds a lot better and a lot more versatile to my ears. The MXR77 is the best OD I've owned, to my ears.

But for me,most of the pedal reviews on Youtube sound better than I can do with them, since so much else is part of the tone equation.

100% agree.

"Back in the day" I used a TS-9 in front of my JCM-800 all the time. Like, literally 100% of the time. The mid-bump of the Tube Screamer in front of the Marshall was the secret sauce for me.

Yeah, that seems to be very true for many people, but:

1) Isn't the JCM quite different, tonally, from the DSL range?
2) Not a problem for Robert, but I suspect that volume, lots of it, is another key element.

One bit of good news: the current "reissue" TS-9's sound exactly the same as the originals.

(all 4 were more similar than I thought they'd be...)

If I picked up a TS9, where should it go in conjunction with the CS-3 and GE-7???

I've heard many people say a TS9 goes well with a Blues Driver type OD.

Compression pedals will affect the TS9 quite a lot (in a bad way with the Origin), so I think you'd have to take care to match the amp and compressor with a TS - could work depending on the amp characteristics and how you set it, but would need a lot of tweaking to find the sweetspot, imho.

A GE7 might get you more than a little hyper, Robert - avoid! :D

A really well written post!!!!!!

I've been told a lot a TS and I've been given the opportunity to try one out. I will report findings and how the DSL40C responds....

Yeah , the DSL is different, it has more gain and a different mid emphasis, but they do have a pretty similar "Marshall Family" sound I think. The DSL series is more fizzy/modern high gain than the JCM-800. And yeah, at that time the 800 was being used in anger pretty much all the time - either band practice or gigs.
