To Scream or Not To Scream:

Gball, am I understanding your comment is trying to explain the tone is a large part influenced by the V30 here, plus I am assuming 99% correct, his DSL is open back.

Pretty sure this clip also reflects a lot of similarities and differences in gain sound of both V30 and G12 75's here open back

Right, I think you really need to experiment with speakers more in an open back more than a closed back. You're really relying more on the baffle than cabinet volume for the final sound. And I know this sounds weird but my aging ears are beginning to prefer the sound of open-back cabs. So, I sold off both of my V-30 loaded cabs and I am using primarily the Mesa Lonestar with a C-90 in it. That speaker has plenty of low-end punch and whatever I am giving up in bottom end tightness I am getting back in spades with openness in the top end and less directional sound.

Part of it, I think, Is that I am really backing off the gain these days. The red channel on the Mark 5 is running between 10 and noon, and of course I just bought a Fender amp for something completely different.

Nice point Leon mentions that creatures of habit try using the same settings of an amp from a preferred speaker into a different speaker like a G12-75 and hearing it sound crappy. Then he says, the speakers can be made to sound better than "crappy" if one will only tweak the amp to achieve the desired effect. This is also a closed back setting.

Then there is Ola Englund

No kidding. That is a good point that gets lost. Every time I plug an amp into a differet cabinet it takes me a while (sometimes way too long) to dial in the right settings for that cab and whatever guitar I am using. Not to mention tweaks from guitar to guitar. There's a reason the twisty bits twist after all.

G, is this is a new or used amp to you?

All my amps are used. Does yours have the Celestion 10-30 speaker in it?

Bought it new. Has the Ten-30, and although the speaker is far from broken in, the amp is really amazing. Was talking about it in another thread, but Fender is really not kidding about the touch-sensitivity. I've owned a lot of Fender amps over the years, from the '60's forward, and none of them had this kind of response. Still debating about putting a "better" speaker in it but the stock one is better than expected so may just ride it out until it's fully broken in - I only have about 10 hours on it so far.

Oh cool. My little old SS Princeton Chorus got some new speakers a year or so ago. It had the regular blue Fender ones and I put some Weber 10F150T's in it.

Yeah this kind of sounds like home in a way - I have never liked Fender's stock speakers. The Webers in particular lack a certain "authority" in their driven sound, so I have always replaced them with Celestions. In this case, not sure if I will or not but may put a Greenback 10 or G-10 Vintage in it, which in theory at least should be a solid upgrade to the Ten-30.

Got the '68 Princeton "Reissue" and it is freakin' awesome.
I am really GASing for a Princeton-style amp at the moment, but I'm not sure if I would like a brown-, black- or silverface. Have you ever compared the 65 and 68 Princeton reissues? I fell in love with the Milkman Harmonic Tremolo amp when I played it earlier this year, but the price is insane. There is currently a 1962 (brownface) for sale on the Norwegian "Craigslist", and I'm really tempted to make the seller an offer...

I did compare the '65 (blackface) and '68 (silverface). Was an easy choice for me - the '68 is darker, breaks up easier, seems to be an overall more complex tone, while the '65 is all sparkle and spank with what seems like endless headroom...which is great if that's the thing you are going for but I am not. I like the more raw sound of the '68, and it just seemed more full and rich in the midrange.
