To Relic, Or Not To Relic???

Cool....I kinda felt that way...I only asked because a relic'd set was offered to me...

The only way I think that makes sense is if you already have an old guitar and you want to replace the pickups, but you want them to look consistent with the rest of the guitar. I have a friend with a '72 Les Paul Custom. He's put a lot of honest wear on that guitar over many years, along with the wear from the previous owner.

He replaced his pickups just a few years back with a set that was pre-aged (I don't think the original p'ups were in the guitar when he bought it. He likes old pickups way too much to pull them out of an old guitar). Anyway, in his guitar, they look the part. Brand new, shiny covers would have looked a little odd.

Makes sense.....I wanted some input on who it might look. Mine is too clean to benefit from aged pickups...

Yeah. I think your SG looks fine the way it is.

But...thinking of my friend in my earlier post...I just remembered...the pickups that were in his Les Paul absolutely weren't the originals. They were uncovered Seymour Duncan '59s. He gave them to me when he replaced them with his current pickups with the aged covers. I put the '59s in my Washburn.

Ah well, anyway. I do think aged pickups have their place: in an old guitar!

Just to be clear, if a set of pups I had available sounded right, I would put clean pups in an old guitar and weathered pups ina new guitar. It is just, given the choice, I would avoid intentionally damaged merchandise

A guitar chum offered me a set of relic'd Toneriders. But, I never take things that I am not going to use...

Understood. I just mean that I would not let the fact that pus are relic's, or minor cosmetic issues such as if they were truly worn, get in the way of installing the right pups for the right ax. If I was given an option, I would always choose non relec'd, even if the guitar was worn or relic'd

Good point....I'm waiting on (6) Thro-Bak's to arrive. (4) for the double neck project and (2) for the SG...

On point as always!!!!

You know, I get sidetracks, Bro, so I often ask questions to evaluate what I am thinking to see if it's worth messing with....

Nope. It was just something me and another guy were chatting about and he offered me a set....but since I got 6 pickups coming, and a closet full of pickups, pickguards, necks, completed prototype guitars and just about everything else you can imagine already on had, I decided to chill....

I had NO IDEA----
A. how it would sound
B. if it would work
C. why I use letters not numbers
D. how big a P.I.A> fitting it (a covered pup) in the damn hole from and uncovered pup ---would be

BUT BY GAWD I did it......for 38.00 BUCKAROONIES......not like I freed the known world --- but I did it--- and ---after about 3.8 seconds I knew --- I LIKED IT!
-----now had it sounds like DOOKIE-- it would have come back out and been thrown in a drawer to be donated to OWegis house of guitar parts and drum stick donatorium-- BUT its a KEEPER --- so the OLD pup is now in a pile of stuff to give to Owegi to turn into a MEGA 10000 watt Super computer or amp or .......a pari of scissors I dont know the mans skill set --- but he can make some stuff for SURE!

SO

they are GFS pups --- a SET are like less than dinner for you and the wife at Outback for pete sake..............caution to the WIND -- damn the torpedos --- dont eat yellow snow!

Yikes. Have you ever tried decaf?

I think Malcolm thought a lot about his tone. I also think the "rugged" look of his guitar may have been intentional. It is not like he was poor or did not have time to think about it. This fella had road techs! Anyway, I have nothing good to say about that guitar until I can see whether the pups are adjustable or not.

NICE!!!!

I want to tell you that I truly, most sincerely value your input, my friend. I guess I became so powerfully distracted by the entire Von Herndon thing that I spent more time fiddling with my guitars than actually playing them, so I am trying to be less impulsive and pay more attention to what makes sense. Out of 22 Von Herndon's produced, I am down to just three and all those already have a home, so to speak, and after the double neck (which has been 6 months in the planning stages) I am going to try really hard to just play, take lessons and leave the screws alone....
