Remixing My Cut Of Watchtower - Again:

I've really been getting into mixing and mastering here of late and i have found that getting a good sound - on a wide range of devices - isn't as simple as I had originally considered it to be...

When I found a mix that sounded great on one device, it was less than memorable on others. So, I am now coming up with a mix down that is a good average across the three most common devices - I-phone, i-pad and PC speakers.

Little nuances, like the octave-apart electric rhythms and the octave-apart trill in the verse sections are largely unheard in the current mixes, as is the acoustic guitar track.

I like to call this version my "Producer's Cut" edition. This is my third mixdown and this has the best average across the tonal spectrum on a range of devices. Your critiques and comments are always welcome...

There have been some real issues with Soundlcoud altering the volume levels of the tracks, so i am not quite sure how this will turn out...

Great Job Robert. Nothing wrong here im just used to hearing that acoustic guitar at the begining of the song . You using 5th chords at the opening of the song ? Maybe try using the regular ol cowboy style chords at the start. What is it Am,G,F ?Sounds good Robert ,you got your Jimi down :)

Hey, Goo!!!!

I'm shooting for a real 'metal' feel on the opening, and there's a lot of work going on in here. There is an acoustic guitar track in the background that is brought forward behind the vocals, but it is pulled back during the heavy phrases. There are two 'clean' guitar rhythm tracks also.

In this version, I am in standard tuning and the intro phrase is played as A# - C - G#. While it's true that I am using root/5th chording on the intro, there are actually 6 separate guitar parts on the intro phrase. Two tracks feature a conventional root/5th chord structure in frets 1, 3 & 4. Tracks 3 & 4 feature a two-string 'diad' variant of the A# - C - G# played on the E/A and A/D barred at frets 6, 4 & 3 respectively, followed by another A# - C - G# variant played by barring the D/g at frets 7 & 10, then completing the G# phrase by barring the A/D at the 10th fret. This is what makes the intro sound so massive...

Here's an interesting email I got from Soundcloud:

So, I guess when you nail a song really close to the original, they suspect it as sampling??? This happened to my friend - Fil Oliveri - with one of his recent AC/DC covers, but Fil's cover really sounds like AC/DC. My cover of Watchtower does not sound anything like Hendrix, other than it replicates his phrasing fairly well...
