Panama Loco "X"

There is a certain "jangle" to a VOX that is alien to other amps-----cant describe it any better really---

Nothing else has that tone........and that HAS it
Check out the clip and let me know if you still feel that way

:)Well... they don't sound anything alike, now do they...

I have my guess...it's mine though...I'm not sharing.:dood:

Cab selection is such a significant variable, how can anything sound like anything really? I imagine the exact same head with very different cabs must be unidentifiable in separate recordings.

I hear JNAGLEish VOXness in both --- and big volume flux......bass is more prevalent in one..........no they are not that same
But -- my AC4 made more "VOXISH" tones than my VT20--both VOX but one tube ---one modeling----and TBTH the Fender Mustang came CLOSER to sounding like the tube AC4 than the VOX VT20/..........so.................................

The Vox is first. I imagine if you wanted to cheat you could have compared to the first clip!. I was going to say that the all-tube Panama sounded warmer than the Vox (tube pre-amp and SS power), but there is also the 10 " Vox speaker v the 12" Panama, tube selection, etc

The Panama is also darker. I had the tone at 7pm and it was still darker than a balanced Vox

My Panama leans "dark" as well....for me this is good--- being a bass player at heart an all---- I prefer the dark tones.....over those wailing screetching HIGH tones you lead players like (ugh)

ALl joiking aside I feel I can alter/add the HIGHs when needed ....but the low moves air and tone......

Agreed. That is not a complaint. It is darkER than the Vox, but if I had to describe it on it's own, I would call it warm.

I'm gonna confess. I cheated as you outlined...but only because I saw both links posted when I came back for a read through.

So do you have a preference? I have no horse in the race, I like them both and do not have to choose. Also, what do you think of the Peavey speaker (which is sort of the same question!)

Well one thing you mentioned is cab or speakers it does make a fairly big difference I
have 5 different celestions in 4 diferent cabs well 3 cabs one combo and then the eminence 10 inch red fang in the orange combo.
The same blackheart same settings with a greenback vs the g12 H is a whole different animal. I think some of the Jangle is the tele
and god I hate you tube amp demos with just single coils or single bridge I like to hear some humbuckers and a few power
or heavy chords . What kind of speaker you using? with a name like loco we got hear a few heavy growls
The tele is a HB sized P90 - BKP Mississippi..that has to count for something!
The Speaker is whatever comes with a 1986 Peavey Triumph 120 - it is a heavy 12" speaker (not my image)

I like both for different reasons...the vox's speaker has a fuller range, but behaves as most SS amps with dynamics(in my experience...not badly, just different). The Panama, through the Peavey, is more compressed/focused, but rings a bit differently with picking dynamics...very EL84.
I'd love to hear the Panama through a good sized, closed back cabinet, with another speaker. My money says that it fills out nicely, and it keeps the chime. I would wager that it will be a decent(at the very least) amp for a lot of situations. If I were in the market for something like this now...either this, or the lower gain version, would be near the top of my list(I would prefer it to have a 16ohm tap...not a big deal though, as I'm happy to see 4ohm available). But I already have 3 amps in this class...and the makings of a fourth beside my bench...so... I choose to live vicariously through you.

I am above to get myself in trouble in, 3-2-1

So what cab and speak would you pair this with?

Hahahahahaha!!!!!!
For size...I really like the dimensions of the Orange PPC112 cab...I don't care about the name. I like the size of the enclosure better than a smaller, but deeper one that I have, for some speakers.
Speaker...I am a fan, so....anything WGS British Invasion series.
I have the Reaper(regular, and 55hz), Green Beret, ET65, and access to a 4x12 with a pair of Green Berets, and a pair of HM75s. I like them all for different reasons. My favorite, of late, is the Green Beret.
No affiliation...at all.

Panama was using WGS, and re-badged WGS speakers fairly recently...like, last year...I don't know what they're using now.

Thank you both. So do you guys really think the Peavey speaker is inferior to the Panama offerings?

Also, esge, what speakers do you have in your cab? Probably the Purplebacks, right. Does it have an attenuator and does it work well?

I can't answer that from experience, but at the prices seen on some of the cabs from Panama...if the speakers in them suck, but the build quality of the cab is ok, they're still priced ok in comparison to an average empty cab.
I would imagine they'd pair well with their own amps(just like Peavey tries to match speakers to their amps)...but if I thought that the speaker was horrible after break in, I wouldn't hesitate to toss in a WGS Green Beret(or some such thing).

PEavey makes FINE gear --- as you know I am a FAN---
Changing your cabinet (closed vs open) would probably have a big effect....

Mine has the Attenuator--- yes it works very well.
I have the Purpleheart AV30
