Opinion Poll - Tuning Keys:

Gold Grovers or Aged Nickel Gotoh Vintage???

Mini round/oval and tulips are my favorite, but the big half circle Grover type are right up there with the others too. The only one's I really don't care for are the kind of square looking one's, unless they are the old school acoustic type tuner sets. The big ole bass elephant ear type are my most best'er'est favorite - but, at last, they don't fit too well on guitars, so...

Just curious to see what the different opinions are on asthtetics and/or????

Well, since you asked...

Although, I do have the plastic keys on my 2014 SG, and I think they look okay on that guitar, I generally am not a fan of plastic keys on tuners. I like metal keys better. There are exceptions, but that’s my general preference. As for the poll question, unless an antiquated tuner is going on a worn, vintage-looking guitar, I prefer shinier gold.

My preferred shape for keys varies from guitar to guitar, however. I don’t have a single favorite shape.

I don’t care for press-in bushings, either. I much prefer the screw-in bushings, as it seems they would be more solid and stable over time.

I like both but given a choice I’ll take Grovers every time. They feel so much better when tuning. I won’t take Klusons off a guitar that already has them, but with an empty peghead the choice is easy: Grover

I've always loved the look of Green Keys and I am yet to have tuning trouble with a set.

Even the Kluson vintage tuners that came on it stayed in solid tune....the posts were just too short IMHO.

Now the Gotohs have the longer posts but still work with vintage, drive-in bushings.

However, I do get where you coming from on the solid nature of the screw-in bushings....

Either way is a win. These Grovers been on my bench for years and I have tried several times to give them away with no luck whatsoever!!!

I don’t have any issues or concern about tuning with the plastic keys; I just prefer the aesthetics of metal.

I have seen plastic keys on old guitars here and there where the plastic has gotten brittle with age and broken off, but I suspect that is rare. I’ve also seen old guitars where the plastic keys were fine, so it’s a hit-and-miss sort of thing.

that just screams vintage Gibson to me. ! I like them..a whole bunch !

On my G400. I put on a set of Gibson Deluxe tuners I snagged off eBay. Not that the OEM ones were bad. They actually worked pretty nicely. I was going for the look. So.... yeah..... I’m no help. Please ignore me. View attachment 27742

I have a set of Gibson Deluxe Green Keys.

The only reason I didn't use them is I would have a couple of "figure 8" screw holes and that just bugs me....

On the Custom, Gold Grovers all the way.

On a Standard, I prefer the look of original Klusons, or Nickel (or chrome depending on other hardware) Schallers with Keystone style knobs.

I love how the keystones look on a custom....but since this one has Grover kidney beans - and stays I perfect tune - I just didn't mess with it!!!!!
