I think there's a developing consensus that nobody likes gigging the big combos.

I haven't seen anyone yet say that they don't mind lugging one of those huge 212 combos like the Mace, Deuce, 5150, or JSX. Most people who gig combos don't have anything bigger than a Classic 30.

My friend with the Mesa Rectoverb 50 has been regretting buying it ever since he started gigging again six years ago but he's stuck with it really.
I actually gig 2x12s quite often. Yep, they're heavy. Easier though than hauling a 100 lb 4x12 up my basement stairs by myself. I also load into an SUV so only have so much space. Most venues we play even these are overkill. One of yhe nicest for small spaces is the 6101 with matching 6912 cab. Nice little mini stack with a closed back cab.

What speakers came in that 6912?

It had a Celestion Gold S303 200 watt, essentially an EV 12L. I found it harsh and it made it very heavy. Overkill. I now have a G12-H30 in that and a T-75in the combo. Seems to work well. I use the 6912 with a Traynor Greenie 1x12 with the Mini Jube.
cool, h30/gt75 is a great combo. The 6100 series is so darn good, what a versatile amp Marshall made , all 3 channels really have their own mojo

I almost always buy combos, but I think heads and cabs are a better way to go. Combos very often come with crap speakers, so you may as well buy the speaker/cab that you want because you're likely gonna have to replace the speaker anyway... If you get a nice cab then you can have several heads to plug into it which has to be fun.

In retrospect, I should have bought the Origin head rather than the cab although it sounds good as a combo once I swapped the speaker for a low Greenback 25w, and I can plug other heads into the speaker - I might get a DSL1 head.

The only combo that I've owned that didn't need constant attention is a vintage Fender Vibrolux.

Every other combo has needed the tube sockets retensioned constantly. Loose tubes, bad connection etc...

Even my high zoot Marshall Bluesbreaker, no problems though after putting the chassis in a head cab.

NO more combos for me.......no matter how cool- convenient they look. 20190329_161122.jpg

My friend and former bandmate Bert joyously traded his Mesa Recto-Verb 50 112 combo for this Jet City Amplification JCA100HDM head and JCA48S 412 cab yesterday ...

I asked him "Did the dude make an old man noise when he picked the Mesa up?" ... to which Bert replied: "I carried it out. Wasn't giving him the option to change his mind." Says it all really ... I never volunteered to help Bert move the thing until a few gigs ago, when he had hurt his back. His back was so sore in fact, that he decided to lend his amp to the next two bands instead of moving it off stage, which resulted in a $500 repair bill. Despite the cost of repairs he traded it away the first chance he got!

This is the first amp I ever bought. I got it from my guitar teacher in 1977. It's loud as hell, and will not break up. Never, ever, ever break up. It sounds great, and has a killer reverb and echo. And, an accordion input.

Then, I bought a DST30, which is a custom made AC30 based amp. I was sick of schlepping around a half stack. It weighs more, and is much louder. And, it's a sick amp. Sounds amazing, especially after installing some early '60s Goodmans Audiom 60 guitar speakers in it.

Some beauties behind that DST, but probably no accordion input.
