New Borrowed Mesa Fillmore 50 Day!!!!

And I can see that the sound of a Mark 5 may not be for you. They have a unique thing and don't sound like anything else; instead of that ripsaw kind of sound that, say a Recto or a lot of Marshalls have, they have a more liquid, singing kind of gain that may not be what you or someone else is looking for. Was just commenting though that the amount of gain they have on tap is pretty absurd. I've not run across many amps that can compete with a Mark 5 for the sheee amount of gain, but of course the nature of that gain can be quite different.

That's exactly what I was told by many about the Mark 5. But, I'm convinced that "plenty of gain" for some people, is akin to Malcolm Young's tone.

But, you are right, it's a gain structure thing. I've that chain saw mid range coupled with enough low end to get speaker movement.

I really tried to like the Mesa tone...

Wish I had kept up with this thread more. It's a shame @Robert Herndon that you didn't try the Boogie with the matching or similar closed back 1x12 or better cab to preserve some of that low end you seem to crave...but I guess that would have defeated the purpose of scaling down your rig size foe ease of movement.

Sory to hear it didn't work for you, but happy you found a target amp to go for. A lot of folks overlook the older Marshall and even Peavey SS amps for no real good reason.

Hey, Joe!!!! (I hear a song in there)

I agree...I think I could have worked with it (Mesa in general) and maybe even made a Mark 5 work with a Tube Screamer TS-9 up front, but my custom 2x12 elweighs only 28 pounds and fits in my trunk.

Also, I didn't like the "learning curve" with the Mesa. With Marshall, I can get a great tone from a 8200 Valvestate, a MG100HFX or a DSL40C, in 30 seconds of EQ adjustments and I'm ready to play.

The 1993 Marshall Valvestate Bi-Chorus 8200 has enough of everything on its own, but also responds favorably to being hit with a TS-9.

It was @Don O that told me he used to hit his 1997 Marshall Valvestate 8280 2x12 Bi-Chorus with a TS-9, or I would have never tried it.

I think for me, I came to realize that all my recordings were done on a Blackstar ID-Core 100watt Direct-Out into Audacity, and yet I was screwing around, wasting time on finding a tube amp that did something magical...

Tell me honestly, what's wrong wit this tone???

Man, you sure the one you played didn't need new tubes or something? I can get AC/DC tone out of the clean channel. The Mk4 and Extreme modes will melt your face at 1:00 on the gain. I've never played any Marshall that has as much gain as a Mk 5, albeit with the aforementioned differences in texture.

Well, it was brand new, so anything is possible, but it sounded fine, it just didn't grab me. I wish we were friends on FB so I could send you a video via messenger of the Fillmore.

If I wasn't so inherently tight, I would have bought a Marshall YJM 100 and that would be it....that amp was really great....but TBTH, I'll likely put the Tube Screamer in front of everything...LOL

For me too much chorus, but I'm more a plug straight in guy, otherwise I liked it. This will sound nuts, because it is, but I have around 150 or pedals I rarely ever use.

What I do know for sure is using the gear that makes you happiest makes you play better.

That's all that matters.

I'm a chorus freak!!! I love it....

You'd probably like this tone better...

No chorus...

I do for solos most of the time. I haven't found the amp yet that sounds worse with a TS or SD-1 in front.

TBH, last couple of months I have been using my amps clean and dry and getting all of my dirt from pedals. I picked up a Wampler Dracarys a while back and it took me a little while to unlock its secrets but once I did its become hard to turn it off. It's literally the best high-gain tone I have ever gotten in front of the Mark 5 in Fat Clean mode with a TS-9 in front of it. For the Marshall its been mostly an Angry Driver set to stack the BD into the front of the Angry Charlie.

Yeah I had to stinker around for some time top get used to it and I had real issues gelling with the big Mk V on channel 2. So much dinking around to get what I wanted., The TC100 was just there real fast even with the different EQ style of Mesa. SO I went with that.

@Don O bought a pair of Valvestate 8280 Bi-Chorus 2x12 Combos in 1997. He ymtold me he used to hit them with a TS-9. I tried it on my Valvestate and it was phenomenal!!!

Guess what??? The solid state MG100HFX reacted to it like a tube amp too.

I was shocked!!!!
