It would be so much easier if I just switch out the cream rings for black and put the black knobs on it.

Perhaps reconsider reflectors?
These are what I have on my Tribute.
I think they'd look great with the new stain color on yours.

My 2 - cents is either the Gold , or Amber.
It makes the controls pop more, but that’s just me.

Those reflectors look good, as do the metal knobs

For 12$ I’d try those gold Tele knobs.

Anything for a bit of contrast to the body but complimentary to the pickups and rings.

I know a lot of guys like them, but I don't care for reflector knobs. I have a bunch of those metal "Tele" knobs that are black. I'm thinking about what would be a good color to paint 4 of them. Like one of the browns or maybe one of the metallic colors like antique brass or one of the bronze or copper or something.
