Interview:

Had some multi-scale Jackson 7 strings come across my bench. The low 'b' was 15 cents off (sharp) with the saddle all the way back.

I started looking closely at this and discovered the nuts were cut in a way that shifted the intonation point towards the tuners.

Fortunately, the first fret action height was out of spec at .030, so there was plenty of material available to make the necessary changes, and dial 1st fret action in at the .025" spec, but it takes a lot of time to correct this kind of anomaly.
 
My job is strangley satisfying, despite 10 and 12 hour days. What might seem dull and monotonous to the casual observer, really isn't what you might think.

I'm turning out guitars intonated so close to perfection that it's scary. Our "stanard" is within 5 cents of pitch. I set them dead-nuts and i compare the 3rd, 5th and 7th fret notes with the 12th and average them if necessary.

Every instrument gets "jammed" at my workstation and every aspect of that guitar is micro evaluated. If I find flaws or problems, those guitars do not pass inspection.

Even with this hyper level of detail, I'm still exceeding my projected numbers of 64 full setups on an 8 hour day and 80 on a 10 hour day.
