Feeling Left Out........

I will say this --

As a total talent-less hack and a HOME NOODLER -- for fun and relaxation-- the pedals and models et all just ad comp-lication and distraction-- I can see however a need for these items especially for a gig guy who NEEDs 1 (or 2) guitars to be able to sound LIKE -- ANgus young and Richie Blackmor AND Tommy Shaw--- ANd Tom PEtty and....and 10 other musicians --- in an hour
Or someone recording say an ORIGINAL song and wanting a particular -- different-- original tone ---then by all means ---pedal on!!!

I like the dynamics of playing with clean and filth, and flavors in between...occasionally.
I find it convenient to have them available at a toe tap....occasionally.
It doesn’t matter to me if it’s an amp foot switch, or a dirtbox...as long as it gets the job done. :) (y)

Ya all need to plug in a 50's tweed champ … and then see if you need anymore " Flavor " , as diverse as we all are, it probably would still come out 50 / 50!
Three tubes, one knob, a speaker and a power chord, a 95 years old man can pick it up … That said, I fell off the wagon, and went on a little pedal bender. I got a ElctroHarmonix { winkie Fight } w/the pedal, Keeley " 30 MS " , Mad Professor " Ruby Red Booster " and Two Mad Professor " Simble " predrivers to put in front and behind of a MP "simble overdriver " , with a KLON KTR, and a late 70's Conn ST-11 strobe tuner that still works fine w/a little TLC. I was so overcome with GAS that I actually bought the second predriver by mistake thinking I hadn't purchased the first one!@ When I realized that, I knew right then, I needed help! ..... Presently I'm in repose at a GAS rehabilitation facility receiving training and therapy of sensory and cognitive function so I can once again live normally in society! No, I do not use pedals, No, I do not use pedals, No, I do not use pedals, No, I do not use pedals, ….

I've got 3 amps I don't pedal. Two are the Katana Mark 2 100C and 100H. They have them built in so these 2 don't count.

The 1 and only amp I've never even tried a pedal in front or loop is the all tube Mono Price Stage Right 15 watt combo. I just love going straight in and using guitar volume/tone controls only. It comes with a 70/80 in it and sounds great. Boxy but still really fun to play blues/rock with. And light. Perfect grab and go jam amp. Plenty loud.

Right now I'm experimenting with different speakers. I put a Jensen Falcon in it and that speaker is creamy and will not get harsh. It became a bit quieter less rude or more polite. Don't know that I want it refined. Next speaker I am trying is an Eminence GB128. With its sensitivity I should get more volume.

The stock configuration is fun though. I just felt like experimenting with it a bit. I have several great pedals and no inclination to hit it.

For me, it depends on the amp in use, and the task at hand.
Says it best for me too. Home player with simple tube amps. Have a bunch of cheapy clones and a few legit brand but budget pedals.
Greatly prefer cranked tube OD may or not be pushed with OD pedals mainly as boost. Can flavor to taste but the base tone has to include the PI and power tube elements. Totally different amps with preamp gain only, even with pedal gain. The exception is Proco Rat. I can use this at less than sweeet spot at times.

I know that Steve will agree that you won't be sorry that you grabbed the KTR.

Speaking of fifties Fender Tweeds, I need to finish the 5F2A Princeton I just built. It sounds good so far, but need to finish up the box so I can spend some serious time playing with it. I hope the tone stack is good, but am planning on making changes if necessary. I bought some nicer modern tubes for it. Once I'm happy with it, I may chase down something else for it.

As far as the original post goes, I play mostly non master volume amps. The amps that do have master volume, I set on the clean side. I like the way all my amps sound on their own. But for what I need them to do, the few pedal I use are for incremental stages of filth for what the songs we play need.

Yep, I'm also joined at the hip to all my amps too! See, when I was first starting out as a young laddie the folks figured out that they would take away my gear for a week to punish me! Nothing else worked and that would leave a scar! I used to crawl on my stomach down the steps, across the hallway, and sneak into their room, a violation there, and put books in the guitar case and sneak at least the guitar upstairs under my bed. It was a Red Hagstrom II back then … So I'm abnormally protective of my gear due to something that happened in my childhood jester.gifnhl_checking.gif2.gif hysterical.gif We grew up when all was just used, not vintage, and were able to buy, sell and trade an unlimited amount of guitars, amps and pedals. I got my wheels spinnin now trying to figure out how to get a Blond Gibsin L-5 w/a Florentine cutaway. Fender Tweeds Rule. Everyone that has played thru mine always comment " Why don't they make amps that sound like that anymore? ". Believe me, I am very lucky to even have them, I say that to myself every day! What caps did you decide to use on your build and why did you choose the ones you did? I ask as there is a lot of choices out there to choose from.

I read several guitar and amp/gear related forums and have come to the conclusion that somehow I am an exception, or an “odd man” out when it comes to effects pedals. I mean that I read of the many pedal aficionados who have multiple drive pedals and I don’t have any. It's for a simple reason. I love the gain and OD and grit my Orange Terror 15 watt amp puts out.

Please! If there are amp owners here that feel the same as I do for what their amp can do by itself, speak up! It's not that I have some aversion to pedals per say, because I do employ in my amp's effects loop a delay and, at times, a reverb pedal.

Definitely depends on the amp, but I will say that even with my Mesa Mark 5, which has more gain available than any reasonable person could ever need, I always have an overdrive in front of it. The OD isn't always on, and I use the guitar volume to modulate the gain of the amp, but a good OD in front of a high gain amp can help tighten the bottom end and punch you right through a mix when you need it. A few weeks ago a bought a Rockett Archer and it's a match made in heaven for the Mk 5.

I even use an OD in front of my Katana.

If plugged into a vintage-style/clean amp (mine is a '68 Princeton Reverb) I use my full pedalboard. I normally have an OD and Distortion or a Distortion and Fuzz, depending on what I am doing at that time. These are just essential tools for that type of amp IMO.

My favorite pedal is my mxr 10 band eq, I also have a Joyo ultimate drive that was gifted to me bye a very cool member here, and an SD1, both of my OD pedals are set as a clean boost.
Now my Vox tone lab has a plethora of pedals on it, and after 3 plus years I am starting to kind of getting a hang of it.
But on the tone lab my favorite is a tube overdrive, and 68 UK amp sim. So it seems I am in both boats here, mxr only or another more, more with the Origin amps, less with the DSL’s

I have a bunch of drive pedals on two different boards, with a third coming sometime. They're great for rehearsals, jams & pickup gigs when I can't use my full rig and/or don't know for sure what amp I'll be playing through.

But they're substitutes for certain circumstances.

And I have a handful of vintage amps in various flavors, most of which sound great. Plus a modern, great-sounding Friedman head and a Celestion-loaded cab for it.

But those are for specialty recordings, etc.

The drive in my gig rack is all tube, with an all tube power amp. That's my home tone, the heart & soul of my sound for many years.
I've been happy with the same Mesa Triaxis since 1995. No desire to change.
No drive pedals needed.

Like you pointed out running an OD in front of an already saturated tone is all about punch and tightness.

I don't use my pedals to get higher gain. I don't need that much saturation. Love me some Hi-C punch.(high caliber)
