I remember when Living Colour came out. I really liked and still do like Vernon Reid's lead playing. To me, it's like he pushes accidentals to the edge or something, like he may not know what he's doing and it begins to sound like wrong notes, BUT he does know what he's doing and it doesn't sound like wrong notes and in fact sounds freak'n awesome as a whole. The band was a trip all the way around. They were somewhat different and fresh at the time and Reid's fairly unique way of approaching guitar/lead was a big part of the reason - at least to/for me anyways... Three Alien Thumbs Up to the Living Colour Band !!!
I really dug them when they first came out. I saw them for the first time about a month after the video for 'Cult' dropped and they were kind of an overnight phenom. It was at the original Hammerjack's in Baltimore for those of you who remember. There were approximately double the people in line that even that huge concert hall could handle, so they ended up piping the show into the bar side and showing it on the TV screens. It was the first and last time I saw them do that for any band. They absolutely slayed that night.
Don't listen to much of their catalog any more, but I do still break this one out every so often:
I always liked it best because it was both darker and heavier than the first two albums. Still rocks hard as hell today. Never really listened to much after the hiatus other than a song or two, but they just didn't seem to have the magic of the first three albums.
