Its time for an all Stratocaster Thread

Now I know I'm in trouble. I can't get the sound I'm looking for from any of my guitars. I pick up my SG and it doesn't sound like Angus playing it. I pick up a Strat and it don't sound like Jimi. LPs don't make me sound like Jimmy Page or Slash.

Haha, well I guess I'm lucky in the sense that I don't have any interest in sounding like anyone but me, however the sound I hear in my head that I am always trying to coax out of my speakers appears to be incompatible with F-style instruments, even ones with humbuckers in 'em.

I have about 9 Stratocasters mostly Squiers ranging from a Standard, Affinity, & Bullet series and a 1996 MIM Fender Strat in Candy Apple Red. Here's a picture of my prized 1998 Fender American Standard Strat that I bought in a pawn shop back in May 2005. I thought it was black at first but then when I got a closer look it turned out to be a very deep purplish Bordeaux colour with subtle metal flakes in the paint-job. I've always dreamed of owning an American Strat since my first guitar was a black Profile Strat copy in 1987 (Made in Korea) which was a good beginner's guitar. This guitar plays extremely well and I don't think I'll ever sell it in my lifetime.

I've done a few things to the guitar like making the fret board look like ebony by applying a few times ebony wood stain and letting it soak in. Then I brushed on raw linseed oil and let it sit over night so it would develop a natural shine sort of like ebony. I also soaked the pick up covers, control knobs, the 5-way selector switch tip and the plastic tip on the vibrato arm all in a big mug of black coffee overnight to give it an aged look which I'm really pleased with. I also did another trick of cutting automotive sheet metal to the size of the pick ups and attaching it to the back underside of the pick ups with a few dabs of clear silicone to hold it in place. This is supposed to direct the magnetic field more upwards for a brighter sound filled with lots of presence. I also did a David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) mod which is a neck on switch for 2 extra sounds. The bridge pup and neck have that Tele sound but are out of phase for that really cool nasally tone. Having all 3 pups on at once gives a real sparkling type of tone.

I only have one "Strat" right now, as I'm not a big Strat fan.
This one was owned by Larry (Rhino) Reinhardt of Captain Beyond and Iron Butterfly.
He was a local cat that used to play around town and teach guitar.

Its a partscaster that he put together some time in the 80's. It went thru several facelifts over the years and ended up with a Stetsbar trem and a pair of Amalfitano pickups.

I got to be friends with him while working at a bar in Bradenton Fl. that he played at often, and started doing guitar & amp repair for him.

Here's Rhino back in the day with Duane & Berry, from one of the greatest Southern Rock bands in the world.
They were all buds in Fla in the 70's.

After he passed, I had a chance to buy a piece of rock history, so I went for it!
Ended up with his amp too.

Your still missing one more Strat Blackie?;)

Yeah, I usually don't try to sound like someone else, either. However, that's not to say that if I hear a sound I like that I won't try to figure it out.

Angus's tone is actually pretty easy to replicate. My friend Fil Oliveri, of Solo Dallas fame, has several videos on the topic. Equipment is one element of course, and nailing the picking/chording/ phrasing is next.
