I haven't tried the Marshall Codes, But I tried the Kat 50. Only at low volumes, though. The Kat acted like a normal tube amp. Response and dynamics like picking attack, rolling down guitars volume to reduce the drive of the amp... just like a tuber. Didn't hear any weird artifacts, even with some reverb dialed in. The only other effect I tried was the Chorus, with the clean channel... talk about lush. But the Lead and Brown channels are very Marshally, and just flowed so sweetly. Can't believe the K50s are only $200.
 
I like my Kat 50. Its compact, light, sounds great and has a 12" speaker.
The power level is quite decent with good bass response for a compact solid state amp.
And the effects don't sound cheezy.
That's a winner in my book.

Much better sounding than Line 6 Spider stuff.

But, it's not a Marshall.

This is a very lucid description. Being a home volume plaayer, I do not get the opportunity to hear these things as closely as those who play live. I will experiment and listen more closely. Thank you.

I do wonder whether there is much benefit for a low volume player to invest in a tube amp. That said, SS amps were not nearly what they are today a mere 5 yeras ago. I am not sure when hybrid amps began, but I think that is pretty recent too.

I do like the Panama serious Tube amps and the attenuation feature found there.....I can drive the tube but not drive the neighbors away-----of course one would argue this doesnt DRIVE the speaker and get the motion in the ocean that one does at true wide open volumes------but for my personal --playing along to youtube in my Doom Room--- does it REEEEAALLY matter????

If I get a "Model" of the Marshall Plexi with a full stack cabinet (not the real thing --hell it wouldnt even FIT IN THE ROOM) that is not EXACT but close-----does it REEEEAALLY matter???

I thought both sounded like ASS and that is thru my nice headphones that I usually get great yay or nay sounds, Both these sounded like NAY in this clip.
In real life, I am sure I'd get a better representation how they sound while being played.

Wasn't there something written on the album cover along the lines "Kiss uses Gibson guitars and Pearl drums because they want to use the best"? I seem to remember something like that being linked to Kiss in the early days. I had the Kiss Alive album too. I think I got the money from my older brother and rode my moms bike, in the winter, to the James Way store a few miles away to get it - lol.

Basically what I was going to say. The K-50 is a fun diversion, but it's just a toy compared to my Mini-Rec or Mark 5:25 even at extremely low volume. Can't beat the price, and you gotta factor that in as the Mesas cost 5X/7X more plus you need a cab, but I find the Mini-Rec to be a lot more satisfying to play even at conversation/bedroom volume. The Mark likes a bit more juice but still better at slightly higher "living room" volumes, plus you get the CabClone for using headphones. Of course at high volume and for jamming and gigging the Mesas are truly in their element and can't be touched. I would not try an actual gig with the K-50, it falls apart at high volume.

Now that I've lived with the Katana for a while I find myself using it less and less. It's been delegated to something to use on the patio or as a super quick grab-and-go for unplanned jams. Tubes still rule.
