Top vs bottom, on a slant cab…always a mixing game. The top speaker(slanted speaker) has an effect over the bottom(straight speaker -parallel to the cab back) IME. It becomes a bit like rolling tubes, in that the angled speaker reflections invade the territory, more directly, of the straight one within the shared space. All kinds of crazy results come out of each pairing through the interactions between the two. I’ve played around with a couple of 4x12 slant cabs that are on the oversized side, but I don’t have a 2x12 that’s anything like yours. I would imagine there would be some distinct changes in frequency response when swapping speakers.
This whole situation, in my estimation, is what makes me lean towards the 1960b style of cab…or a straight 2x12. I’m not that into the concrete science of it, but my understanding is that some elements of phase cancellation are at work behind the phenomenon.

I think that's very much the reason I have such a hard time mixing speakers in a 212 cab, and it seems to be more so in this cab than it was in my MX cab, but that could also have something to do with ply vs MDF. I've never had a straight 212 and maybe I should have gone that route, but I'm learning thru experience here and didn't know to consider it.

Agreed. I’m not sure how much is “materials used” as opposed to cab volume displacement. Nothing “wrong” with slant cabs…

Except that angled top is aimed right at my face and in my little apartment it's proving to be an issue I hadn't anticipated. I don't remember it being an issue with my MX cab. :shrug: I just ordered one of those Weber beam blockers for the top speaker to see if it helps with that.

Another variable introduced to the system…with the beam blocker. I’m not against them at all though….especially with new speakers.
 
Just to get my bearings I put a Creamback back in my 112 to go back to what I was used to before this cab arrived. I've done so much speaker swapping I forgot where I started from thinking going back would give me a comfort feeling... like "ah there it is"... but I was a little shocked. I thought I would feel right at home, but I don't. Now I can appreciate my new cab for what it is compared to what I was using and this cab definitely sounds better, a lot better in fact.

Hard to go back to just one speaker after using 2 or more.
They dynamics from multiple speakers can be complementary - there seems to be something more than just 1+1=2.
Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), I'm that way now with amps...

I think I did pretty good on this one, it only took me a week to get it where I want it and can call it done. I think that's a new record.

I know I deserve your skepticism, but I'm getting better now that I know what I'm looking for and have most of it now. All my experimenting has led me to where I am now where I'm pretty happy with all my "main" gear, my 2 Les Pauls (Traditional and Standard) and my 5150. This cab was the last thing I needed. I would be perfectly happy with those things if I could never buy another piece of gear ever again.

I'm not saying I'm done buying gear, lol. I'm still GASin' for that P90 Goldtop LP! I'm going to start selling off some of the excess I've acquired along the way to fund it. I'm going to be selling speakers, pickups, pedals, and probably even my Satin Honeyburst Tribute and Melody Maker. :tongue:
 
Funny thing about that 5150 I bought. I didn't even know if I would like it, but it turns out it does what I was using 3 different amps to do. It has great cleans on the green channel giving me what I used my Harvard Clone for, The blue channel gives me what I was trying to get out of my SC20 and with a boost, my Lil' Devil. Then there's the Red channel gives me a whole new high gain that goes beyond anything I've ever had. I knew people liked them enough that I was curious, but I didn't know it was all that. :rolf2:

Edit: Edited for atrocious spelling and I'm not even drunk. :ugh: ...oddly enough, I spelled atrocious right on the first try. :rolf2:

I have to ask how far away are you playing from your speakers I found my amps and speakers sound different
next to the cabinets and across the room better across the room more full sounding 20' away I've all way's
played next to my amps on stage or practice today we were recording ODS 50 watt amp 12" EVM12L speaker and Express amp Marshall 2 x12 cabinet cream back 65
speakers the Express amp sounds bright next to the amp in the past used Marshall 4 x 12 with 25 watt green backs
I now have a amazing Antelope audio Condenser modeling microphone my amps record best microphone 20' away from the speakers the recordings don't lie.

I normally play about 3 - 4, maaaaybe 5 ft from my amp. The way my stuff is arranged in my little apartment I can't really get further away unless I back up into the kitchen where I can get about 10 more feet, but that's not really feasible. If I could rearrange my furniture I could get about 10 more ft in the same room, but I have an office/work area that won't let me do that and I have no where else to set it up unless I get rid of a bunch of stuff, which I'm actually working on.

I think you may have just given me the kick in the ass I needed to get on that. I've been putting it off for far too long.
