Announcing... RiffMasters!

Thanks 'thro!!

I played the guitars, used Toontrack Superior Drummer 3 and Toontrack EZBass for bass. I could play the bass but to be honest it was more relaxing laying on my face and programming it instead. Was time consuming though. Playing the guitar and singing took a relocation off my comfy bed to house den where the "main" setup sits. "Main" as it can be since it's mainly an 4 pre/8 channel interface and my vocal mic (that new white Neumann). At least there's a few guitars I can slide up there though.

The amps are Virtual ....Marshall Jubilees on both sides, JTS.
Is the Jubilee softube ? or other?

Yessir! I used the raw amps instead of AmpRoom this time to save resources. I couldn't add cabs from the Marshall collection but it's fine because the heads have speaker simulation anyway. CPU efficiently was pretty good too at ~25% use with about 28 plugs used total. 2, drums and bass, were virtual instruments. My first real sort of production with Studio One 6 so I was pretty happy with it all.

And to think of the tens and tens of thou$and$ worth in tape, machines, all the processors, effects, a console, dedicated space etc. needed to record anything a few decades ago. How much per hour you say?

You can pretty much put most of it together pretty decent for a thousand bucks. Spend a bit more if you want top shelf mics which probably in the grand scheme of it all make the biggest difference, a treated room, good monitors. I have none of those LOL!

Having talent, inspiration and the time to use it are the real hardest thing to buy LOL!

Also. what's awesome is the newer virtual studio software that eliminates the need for studio treatment, essentially. I have a number of them but Abbey Road is my choice pick. I don't know that they sound as much like their actual space as much as they do like their wonderful speaker systems though. Yea, it's a controlled and measured type of signal but it really sounds like you are in a perfect sort of theatre. With headphones (what the software is all about to begin with) you can be sitting behind many thousands of dollars of speakers and a controlled/measured environment. It even compensates with head movement using your camera, although I don't use that option.

It does not impact the mix in a bad way like you might think either. I mean overall sound is much bigger by ratio but unaffected by any "changing" difference. I use it all the time. YOU HAVE TO make sure you shut it off when you render a project or you will be "double" playing "speaker sound" output to the listener and put them into a multidimensional sonic Twilight Zone. o_O

@Sapient help me understand this... so it treats the monitor output so that it only seems you are in a studio? You do your recording and mix and all that, but turn it off before rendering the final?

it just simulates a better recording environment and that shows up in the final product?

I suspect true RiffMasters will prove out skills other than musical virtuosity. Ego suppression, ignoring critics, smart choices, positivity, dogged persistence round after round as well as creative flexibility. Also, not being a dick. Y'know... the long game.

Member @Sapient kicks down the RiffMasters clubhouse door, to drive a pencil in everyone's gut with a fun original!! Nicely produced and performed ya punk!!! ! A bit heavy on syllables for a couple lines, and I kept hearing background vocals that weren't actually there.

Too bad it won't get voted on... but good for one solid point to find entry onto the RiffMaster board!

Welcome sir!
*FIXED*

I added a deesser turned on the gate that I had off (oops), and did a Mid/Side treatment on the sound placement.

Sounds better now by a lot, I think. Thanks for your critique. (that one sssssss was NASTY!)

OP updated.

It simulates as if you are in their actual studio for your mixing and recording pleasure ...mastering studio. You get to be in their environment with your headphones .....eliminating also the need for your own room treatment during those stages. You turn it OFF when you render.

You could mix like the best of them in a noisy factory. Lol.

I should say the software gives you the sound as if you are hearing external speakers, not headphones. That's the idea of it.

@Sapient just a word of warning it is against Riffmasters "rules" to edit a music submission after you post it in in this main thread. Or to be more clear *anything that will be going up for a poll vote*

in this case your punk number is not going up for any kind of vote, so editing has no consequence. Just want to make sure you understand that as a new entrant.

If you feel like you need to edit and re-link after a voting round, I think that's ok. There is also a separate thread for alternate takes.

Yea, I was pretty sure of that, but yea, considering the circumstances I knew it didn't matter. I'd rather have it fixed in my case.

Jan 25th falls on a Thursday.
This means only 2 weekends remain to polish up any yet-to-be submitted "Folk'd Up" projects.

No obligation to enter anything, but if you don't you'll leave valuable points on the table. This will greatly increase your chances of being tapped for a Guitar Duel. Luckily, nobody will have to go head-to-head with the merciless Mr. Ku-pacabra this next round, but I can confirm he will continue.

Even while he now resides way high up just underneath the Penthouse (reporting there's sure a lot of strange noises coming from the suite above, and it don't sound at all like the Ramones), even in second place he'll likely fight on like a wounded tiger.

For contestants in the mid and lower positions like myself, we are all in danger of falling into or near the basement.

To clarify, your opportunities for this round are:
1. Rock song -> Folk (unplugged)
2. Folk song -> Rock treatment
3. Punk-Out

You need one of the first two to get into the Main Event #2 poll vote. 1st place 10 pts. 2nd + 3rd place 7 pts each.
Any "Folk'd Up" entries that do not reach the top three in votes in the poll vote are still worth 5 points.
If you submit both the first two challenges = 3 automatic bonus points, but only one can be in the poll vote, your choice.
Your punk out is worth a single point
All submissions minimum 1:00

How about a points update Mr. @LiveeviL2000 ?

Is this the main competition thread? There are a few. ?? Anywho ..I can repost somewhere else if nececellery. Here's my Punk submission, an original called ...

Drive a Pencil through your Gut

If you're feeling lonely
The world seems out of key
You broke your damn last cigarette
The lock don't fit your key

Drive a pencil through your gut

You broke your leg last Saturday
Your dog got off his leash
Had to piss into a bottle
Cuz the bathroom's being cleaned

Drive a pencil through your gut

Drive a pencil through your gut
Drive a pencil through your gut
Drive a pencil through your gut

Sick of life and :poo: you don't care
No more fks to give out cuz you've already been there
Your boss got smart so you kicked his smart ass
Now you're thinking of her while you're kicking a can.

Upcoming appointments canceled
Too lazy to get there
Can't steal a box of cheap white wine
Surveillance everywhere

Drive a pencil through your gut

Drive a pencil through your gut
Drive a pencil through your gut
Drive a pencil through your gut

Rock on wholesome!! :yesway::dood:
That was pretty awesome !!

No, I edited my post to clarify, and in later posts clarified I was only playing along to the song.

Unfortunately, due to an arrogant, and dismissive 3-chord monkey insult (there are actually 4, lol), implying I may have cheated (not playing on the track at all), minimal effort, and flat out saying I suck, etc. this experience has left a bad taste.
This was followed by an excuse about humor as justification.
I even voted for the guy, before I read the stuff he posted.

If being pissed off after unprovoked personal attacks is "butthurted", then so be it.
This is the kind of :poo: that prompts people to leave forums.
At the least, it has really turned me off to the Riffmasters thing. I was reluctant to participate, and have stated many times I am not much of a player.

I chose not to respond while heated.
So, I refer to the title of Ku2's punk submission and direct it to him (as he did to me / us in post #1093).

Thanks to the rest of you for your kind words and support.

Eat my dust suckers, I'm on top!!
(if even for the briefest of moments)

I hope you decide to keep Participating, I thought it was great.
