Discussion: Recording, DAWs, and Mixing

Something that I want to try this weekend is using the same guitar input to run two separate plugins at the same time. Running my guitar into my interface and then recording two tracks at the same time. Each track loaded up with a different amp plug in. Not sure if the processing will keep up or if it's even feasible.

You may be pleasantly surprised. The recording should sound better than your “live play”, but hey…nature of the beast.

So I've been complaining a while now that I have no adjustment available through my interface on my guitar level. It always seems to be too hot and clipping my plugins. This video I just ran across sheds some serious light on how these interfaces interact with the plugins. Essentially, for my UA Volt, I should be setting my input gain to 0, and running it. I had always thought of these input gain controls to be like a traditional mixer where 0 would be -70 to -100db and adjusting from there. However, that's not the case at all. Maybe I'm late to the show but now I'm really interested in checking my plugins after this video.

I could never answer because I have only got “active” bass guitars…but I suspected something like this.

I complained a while on how my toilet was backing up. I then watched a vid on how their sounds interact with random house insects. Shorty after that I just decided to fix it.

:)

Why do this? Just buss the two tracks you're recording on into one effect to listen to. There is really no need to create obstructions on a channel you are printing to. You can also control latency. Also, higher end interfaces are always better at this.

I’d have a Win platform for all the heavy lifting. Just think it’d be entertaining to do some Linux work. And Realer does have a download for Linux. Don’t know how the add on programs would work. But could be interesting to find out.
My DAW is linux compatible but many plugins would be unable to work.
However I think they have a whole music inspired OS. @bea was talking about it.

Wondered about plugins and add-ons.
It's mixcraft 9. It has enough plugins to get by for me but many of the fancier expensive ones might not work in Linux. Most all of the plugins should tell you if they will work with your OS.
(Edited for clarity)

Of all the ones I purchased I don't remember anything installable for Linux. Native VSTx and ProTools for Mac and Win only. :(

I'm not even aware of plugin makers for Lynux. There's got to be some.

No, don't drag a track to another one. Just keep your mono tracks sending to the master. Like I said, you don't want to smash one mono track over another in a typical case. Think in terms of sending tracks to effects tracks instead of to other audio file tracks. Hope that helps.
Clear as mud . Crash course in brain surgery ! Lol. I get it but a master bus is designed for mastering, so you set the tracks in to a bus to later manipulate what ever is needed to make the final mix stick like bubble gum ?

In mixcraft you can add side chains to tracks (I guess most DAW'S do this)
Once you add a side chain that has been pretty much configured it handles the effects for guitars in a manor a producer would use.

I don't know to much about side chains but the time I used one in a recording "you" made a positive comment about the mix. Go figure. Lol

There might be some , however in Mixcraft you could get by without the $$ plugins. Nothing fancy but it works and is EZ peasy.

Not sure if you remember a user on MF that went by Bluesclues ?
He used mixcraft and the guy could really play guitar. He used a Marshall pre amp. Dude could play, layed down the riffs. Have not seen him in a dog's age. He was a moderator on another Marshall splinter forum that went dorment.

I've used an external sidechain to create ducking for a kick involving a compressor. Only time I did it and it was just an experiment since I'm not a Rave jockey. Lol.

I do remember that one that sounded really nice ...that was probably it. They all sound good but I remember one being double cool. I don't know Mixcraft well and don't know if the term sidechaining is the same as a bus to them. I know a sidechain typically goes out of an effect into another to cause custom action on the effect. Could be a buss (bus - Lol), or whatever.

Rock on wholesome. :dood:

Interesting ....I don't remember that user at all. Strange. I remember that show on TV my girlfriend's kids would watch but we don't have to get into that. BLUES CLUES!!! :hide:.

I might know of the "splinter" though. Never went there to join though. Sort of a poverty stricken UI website. Lol.

Also, yea, the DAWs I'm aware of all come with plugs. S13 also does. You can easily get by with them. Buying 3rd party is just another avenue of gear collection and acquiring certain sonic tastes. The UIs are also real nice and make using them more of a pleasurable experience a lot of times. I guess it all counts in ones "joy" factor, but it's certainly not necessary to produce music.

I do like the plugins. I let myself be roped in to another EZ drummer pack during x-mas. Custom kits.
I just bought another interface. M Audio

So last night I hooked up a second portable drive and switched file destinations, it's working. Laid down six tracks plus midi drum triggers via Power drums.
Computer Performance was improved though I haven't done any effects, compression or eq yet. but it's promising so thank you @Thatbastarddon

I think if I do reverb via a send it will also use less resources

For some reason I thought Bluesclues had passed on. I remembered a few splinter forums popping up. The most prominent was moderated by a guy who had a personal FTP file site link passed around on MF pvt chats. I have no idea how people got a hold of the link but it was thousands of his personal files including financial info, pictures of family, etc. :D
