Discussion: Recording, DAWs, and Mixing

Gearspace post from 2018 referring the Camden 500 by their report.
"
Just wanted to give you guys some updatse on our side as a lot of you were really interested in the products we announced at NAMM.

Camden 500

First bit of news - we have finalised Camden 500 and JUST ordered material for production of Camden 500. We're on-track to get units shipped our to retailers by end of June. The Camden 500 has turned out to be quite a thing. It seriously needs to be heard to be believed... We have trouble explaining what it is as "mic pre" doesn't really tell the story. We’ve settled on Preamp and Analogue Signal Processor.

So yeah - first and foremost, Camden is a mic, line, and instrument preamp. It has extremely low-noise and ultra-low distortion at all gain settings (typ. <0.0005% THD) and is both frequency and phase-linear. It provides a punchy, powerful but linear sound that offers a perfectly neutral palette to apply analogue and digital processing. I've gotten some of the best acoustic guitar and drum recordings I've ever achieved with it.

But the Camden also has our analogue saturation circuit - Mojo - which has absolutely blown away our expectations. We’ve worked extensively these last few months on finalising "Mojo" and ensuring it has that "vibe" that transformer/vintage mic pres have. And - WOW - it really needs to be heard to be believed... Mojo has two new modes - “Thump” and “Cream”.
“Thump” is the operative word as this saturation mode introduces low-harmonics that don’t get flabby or overwhelming with nice upper harmonics - it sounds amazing on drums, bass, vocals, synths, guitars, stereo mixes; anything you put through it will get a thicker, more present sound but with tight and accurate transients

“Cream” is a complex saturation mode that adds a wide range of harmonics and changes dramatically based on the source. But the overarching result with “Cream” is groovy, gooey, valve-y sound with a real feel. It gives instant vibe - but with British subtlety.
We’ve been blown away at our recent results with artists and producers we’ve been working with during testing. We’ve run every source through a Camden - drums, acoustic/electric guitars, bass, keys, synths, stereo mixes - and the Mojo totally transforms everything - using “Thump”, “Cream” or using both with reamping techniques produces amazing results on pretty much any source.

Again - it really needs to be heard to be believed. So that's what we want to do! We’d like to extend an opportunity for anyone to “test drive” the MOJO circuit by submitting a track or source they’d like to hear through a Camden and it’s Mojo circuit."

I drank the 500 kool aid a few years ago and bought some cards. I haven’t integrated them with my other interface or Reaper yet. Maybe I’ll get off my ass this year and learn how to record.

Awesome , set up Don. I have such limited space.

I was looking at a Warm Audio stand alone pre on Black Friday. I had it in my cart but this unit is a demo in shop full warranty and actually cost less and has better reviews.

Thanks. I stopped buying cards since I don’t really know what I need. 2 mic pres, EQ and comp were a no brainer.

Thanks for clarifying that. I might have saved with that unit but did get a little off the 500 series.
I found a Lindell 503 lunchbox rack with 3 slots with power.
Yep….see @Don O ’s setup I quoted here…I really like his BlackLion lunchbox…it’s rackmountable, has the patchbay up front, plenty of room for multiple channels to be configured easily, and will hold up to 8 units in a three space rack. It’s really sweet. It’s not cheap though, and I’d put myself in a race to fill it…also not cheap, but cheaper than buying full, free standing, versions…that have their own power supplies, and I/O built in…that’s why they differ in price, not as much included stuff…they require the interface box. Now, I see that little 3 space unit, you sent me a pic of, and that’s pretty attractive for dipping a toe in the 500 series lunchbox pool. I’d build a cool channel strip in one of those, happily. I may look into one in the future, but I’ve got other financial commitments now. At least I know it exists…so…thanks!

Oh no recording gear gas.
Damn it google just hooked me. I could easily dump $1k.
SSL just came out with a 6 channel strip. Well made and less than their high end stuff. Thomann is listed as the only vendor. $315, once you add shipping it's probably not as attractive.

Lots of places have them.

I feel so ignorant on this topic... I feel like I should also be salivating over this stuff you fellas are showing
but can't. My old ears probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference, between the $199 vs the $19,999
I am sort of with you there.
It's cool to have the latest wizardry but to gauge the difference and value or bang per buck is tricky for someone like myself. It's like swimming, just jump in the deep end, difference is in the pool water you can see the bottom. With this stuff it's deeper than the ocean.

Point is though, getting an SSL strip for that price is pretty good. If you get "the good stuff" for cheap then I suppose you got nothing to worry about in any case.

It's about time you said what you mean . Lol
That is helpful. The thing about analog is if you don't like it you can sell it with digital not so much.

There is a huge used analog market. I never knew so much was out there besides all the new stuff.
Many new ones are upgraded or latest and greatest.
