Looking for some guidance....

Hey all,

Let's say that I've made a recording. Let's say that I want to track some bass for it, but I don't have a bass guitar.
I also don't have an octave pedal, or a pitch shifter, or anything like that.
I know there is a way to use a plugin for this purpose, and that I could probably record it using a guitar, but beyond that I know nothing.

I can borrow a bass, from my brother or my buddy who has a few, but that takes time and effort, and I want to track a bassline NOW, using the gear I DO have.

Anyone have any suggestions that would possibly give me a passable bass sound without actually having a bass? Doesn't have to be pro sounding, just passable.

Are you using Reaper still?
If so, search the effects for ReaPitch. It's the stock pitch shifter. for live performance it will have delay/latency, but when applied to a recording it works fairly well.

Second this idea! Without having an octaver or a pitchshifter pedal at hand, this is a really close sound

Okay, so I don't like the latency I'm getting with ReaPitch, both live tracked and applied to a pre-existing track. Kinda fun to play around with, and it was cool to hear something in the ballpark of what it might sound like with a real bass, but I think the latency and resulting lag/delay are probably a deal breaker for me...so...
We got our hands on a loaner bass guitar.
Kinda stoked to see what happens now. Thinking about adding bass tracks to some older recordings too.

I know this belongs in another thread, but since eSGEe mentioned it above...

So anyway, why is it that most of the times "any bass will do, cheap or cheaper" is the mantra... but when it comes to choosing a guitar, it has to be a bespoke boutique artisanal instrument uniquely crafted from the lovingly curated woods of the 16th century cognac barrels rescued from the remnants of the flagship sunk in Boston's Tea Party, with pickups handwound by highly trained macaque monkeys?

Just askin'...

Only 2 to go...

Not entirely sure, but for me, it's because I'm particularly passionate about my guitars, whereas I look at the bass as an "essential employee" of the total sound....

But I do hope to one day find a bass player worthy of crediting the instrument with actual art. They're out there somewhere...but they're not me. I'm a riffster. And a mediocre lead player, at best. But one thing I'm not, is a bass player.

Still, I am going to need cohesive bass and since there's nobody else around to do it, well, like learning the DAW and everything else, it falls yet again to me...lol

For me it would be because OP simply wanted to lay down some bass parts, perhaps not even use it again let alone very much. As a substitute for software bass.
If budget fits, go for it. I bought an Ibanez SR400 aways back but wanted a good bass rather than just a software substitute.

Yes. Exactly this.
And I may look into getting some kind of "budget" level instrument to keep around just especially for projects like this one.

Never heard of Celebrity before, but I think it'll do

I started with a bass that was pretty similar to that one…a bit less pointy…same color though. It got me through a lot of writing. Then I found the Washburn…still love that bass. Now I have added a few Peavey bass models…crazy good stuff…fairly priced…solidly built…of course they’re all older, USA models.

Do you have a Mini Moog? DX7? what?
Try dropping the string an octave and see what it sounds like.
