The OP reminds me…way back in the ‘80s in college we recorded some music. It was just for fun but was all original stuff. The “bass” was played by one of the guitar players with his guitar . He just turned the tone way down on his guitar and amp. We made several cassettes and even got some positive comments on the bass!

Nope. No detuning. Just turned his tone controls way down. As a matter of fact, I don’t think any of us even knew about detuning!
