DOC’s Studio Build…

Had a helper last week for hanging drywall. I can handle a 4x8 sheet of 1/2 inch, but I bought 4x12 5/8” for the mud room walls. Hung all the drywall for the mud room and the wall across the garage that encloses the stairs ceiling and creates a good storage space. Completed the shelving in there too. Got some non-related kitchen upgrades to do (BBQ issue related) before I can get back to finishing the framing in the studio.

Got most of the mud room and garage storage done, so back to the basement and studio. Finished drywalling the guitar/amp storage room just outside of the studio yesterday. Started the taping and plan to finish that today. Still have to fabricate a door for that rear access.

The room is 8ft deep, 7ft wide and 5ft tall.

Productive day today. Installed a ceiling fan in the master bedroom, then connected the basement’s electric sub panel to the main sub panel in the garage using #6 gauge for the 50 ft run. The basement is now permanently wired into the generator’s transfer switch sub panel. Previously the basement was just buddy breathing from the furnace outlet.

Got the 20 ft south air gapped wall completely frame and started adding the Rockwool sound proofing. Next I need to fabricate the HVAC ducting boxes which will be about 4 ft square with 6 inch flex ducting snaking back and forth in S curves. The box will then be packed with Rockwool and sealed all around except for the input duct and then the register into the room. I have to make 2 of these. Once they are installed I’m almost ready for drywall !

Those 3 inch black ABS pipes are for cables snakes behind the wall and under the floor.

Well the shop, right next to the studio, buildout is complete. Got the window installed and the last 2 sheets of 3/4” plywood walls installed. The mud room finish and drywall down the stairs and just outside the studio work starts on Tuesday (I got a guy).

Finished the HVAC duct work in the shop. The original ducting was that black round flexible stuff that went across the shop and then into the space where the studio now is. The new duct work is rectangular galvanized steel that goes across the shop ceiling, makes a 90 degree bend and parallels the shop wall and then through the end wall into a closet where the furnace is just outside the shop.

Original duct work.

Nope, it’s HVAC ducting baffles to reduce sound from the studio leaking back into all the other duct work. I don’t have the input and output couplings yet (in transit from HD). When done the entire interior volume will be stuffed with Rockwool sound insulation and the front 3/4 inch MDF cover with have a sheet of mass loaded vinyl on the inside. Furnace/AC air comes into the top duct, then snakes through this baffle and then exits into the register for the room. There will be 2 of these supplying heat and/or AC to the room.
