The Kris Derrig Les Paul Replica:

Max Baranet 59 Replica:

The volume of Baranet’s work was indeed staggering. “One year that I was at Image Guitars, I had assembled or custom made over 150 (Les Paul Replica) guitars,” he recalls.
Serial numbers and markings for replica instruments of the day were not standardized and provide little help in solving the mystery. Baranet says he sometimes used customers’ birthdays, sometimes even Social Security numbers and other combinations of digits.

Hi Robert, I own the Peter "Max" Baranet Kris Derrig Les Paul that you posted a picture of along with its COA from Max on this Thread back on June 12th. You may want to know that I've been playing it and slowly making some upgrades to it.

Here's the guitar as you posted it from the same photo session. The Leather top hat is Signed by Slash on the top, I got him at Paladinos in Feb of 2016 when he jammed for a Cancer benefit. The Leather Jacket is an official Gibson Slash issue jacket over another Leather jacket of mine with the AFD Cross on the back and a Slash autograph from 2012. The pickups here were what came with the guitar with were made by Rob Timmons of Arcane Pickups. Nice but NOT Seymour Duncan APH1's...

I decided to pull those out and I called MJ at Seymour Duncan. There is no one, who would know more about Slash's pickups than MJ. When I told her that I had a Derrig replica that was built by Max, she said, ...say no more, I know exactly what you need.

Installed now are Mid Eighties NOS butyrate APH-1 pickups wound by MJ (Marciela Juarez - the head of the Seymour Duncan Custom shop) to the exact spec of Slash's actual pickups. According to the folks at Seymour Duncan, the Gibson AFD tribute required an APH-1 pickup with different windings and output impedance to compensate for the weigh difference of a Gibson AFD and the known specs and weight of Slash's actual Derrig.
Also I wanted something custom with this "Max" Derrig Tribute in mind. What better than a NOS mid-80s butyrate and bobbins custom wound by MJ Pup.

Here she is with the New Pups.

I have real 1959 single ring tuners and a 1960 Harness yet to install. I am on the hunt for NOS Sprague 192 Pacer Style 0.022uf 600v caps. This guitar came with bumble bee's and my Vintage Harness has black sprague caps, so if the mythically hard as HECK to find 600v Pacers never show up, I will install the harness with the vintage Sprague caps. I have NOS Pacer 192 .022uf 200v's and Modern Orange Drop 600v Caps like the ones Gibson used on their AFD but the real deal just may come along.

Your guitar was the inspiration for this replica...

Greetings And Welcome to TTR, beautiful looking instrument you have there. Iconic Tailsman
Cheers Mitch

Another interesting modification is the NUT. I had Andy Brauer hand carve and install a Woolly Mammoth Tusk NUT like he did on "The Original" aka Slash's #1
Derrig.

As we all know, the NUT material DOES have an impact on the tone. Although this modification is way post AFD, it is something that Slash's Kris Derrig has.

Andy Brauer (pictured here in his shop) has worked on many peoples guitars in addition to working on Slash's Derrig. Keith Richards, Billy Gibbons yada yada,
He also consulted Gibson on the AFD model supposedly. However I don't know this for certain or to what extent.
