The Kris Derrig Les Paul Replica:

Hi Robert, I own the Peter "Max" Baranet Kris Derrig Les Paul that you posted a picture of along with its COA from Max on this Thread back on June 12th. You may want to know that I've been playing it and slowly making some upgrades to it.

Here's the guitar as you posted it from the same photo session. The Leather top hat is Signed by Slash on the top, I got him at Paladinos in Feb of 2016 when he jammed for a Cancer benefit. The Leather Jacket is an official Gibson Slash issue jacket over another Leather jacket of mine with the AFD Cross on the back and a Slash autograph from 2012. The pickups here were what came with the guitar with were made by Rob Timmons of Arcane Pickups. Nice but NOT Seymour Duncan APH1's...
View attachment 32601

I decided to pull those out and I called MJ at Seymour Duncan. There is no one, who would know more about Slash's pickups than MJ. When I told her that I had a Derrig replica that built by Max, she said, ...say no more, I know exactly what you need.

View attachment 32603

Installed now are Mid Eighties NOS butyrate APH-1 pickups wound by MJ (Marciela Juarez - the head of the Seymour Duncan Custom shop) to the exact spec of Slash's actual pickups. According to the folks at Seymour Duncan, the Gibson AFD tribute required an APH-1 pickup with different windings and output impedance to compensate for the weigh difference of a Gibson AFD and the known specs and weight of Slash's actual Derrig.
Also I wanted something custom with this "Max" Derrig Tribute in mind. What better than a NOS mid-80s butyrate and bobbins custom wound by MJ Pup.

Here she is with the New Pups.

I have real 1959 single ring tuners and a 1960 Harness yet to install. I am on the hunt for NOS Sprague 192 Pacer Style 0.022uf 600v caps. This guitar came with bumble bee's and my Vintage Harness has black sprague caps, so if the mythically hard as HECK to find 600v Pacers never show up, I will install the harness with the vintage Sprague caps. I have NOS Pacer 192 .022uf 200v's and Modern Orange Drop 600v Caps like the ones Gibson used on their AFD but the real deal just may come along.

Oh and I got the back of the Headstock Signed by Slash last year at the Whiskey....

Thanks for sharing! Awesome!

Another change that's been made to this guitar was that it was "Consecrated" by Slash himself just over a year ago behind the Whiskey on the Sunset strip.
When the hands of your guitar hero place his "Magickal Sigil" (aka autograph) on your instrument... he's charging it with magical powers for you.
Technically a Talisman can only be Consecrated by its owner magician, but we are talking about Slash and a Max Derrig tribute.
So just join me down this rabbit hole for a minute ... ;-)

Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators were playing The Whiskey on 9-13-2018, so I bought two tickets. I gifted one to a Luthier friend of mine, who lives in my neighborhood and works on several of my guitars. But he happens to also be friends with ACE Bergman, Slash's guitar tech. My main goal for the evening was to see a great intimate show at The Whiskey up close, but also to try and see if I could get the Max Derrig Tribute signed by Slash. Yes I inviting my friend of Slash's tech as a way of stacking the deck, but hey all gotta do what we gotta do...right? No I wasn't gonna ask him to ask ACE for me. When you work in the industry, there is a saying... don't sh*t where you eat. I told him I would go down super early before soundcheck, take my chances at getting the autograph and then meet me in line before doors, which is what he did. He said, "...thanks for the ticket...good luck you crazy stalker."

This was a long shot and I needed a strategy to get the Max signed. So the night before it came to me... Slash has often referenced his love for Led Zeppelin and has said The Heartbreaker solo was a huge inspiration. So if he loves Jimmy Page as much as I do, why not gift Slash a custom T-Shirt of the last known image of Jimmy Page's Dragon Telecaster? I know I would love one. So I ran down to Westfield Mall in Woodland Hills near my house where I know they made T-Shirts on the fly from digital images, and made two custom T-Shirts.

IMG_3728.jpg
This is me trying on the T-shirt before heading out to the show. Note Jimmy's Bow and head cut off just below the top of the shirt.

When I got to The Whiskey w/guitar gig bag and the other T-shirt in hand, it was a :poo: show. The line of fans was from the back of The Whiskey, all the way down N. Clark (Upper San Vicente) of at least 75 people that wrapping around onto Sunset in front of the club. Everybody had something to sign, easily 30 guitars in line, groaning as another nut job (me) with a guitar showing up. There I was with a Peter "Max" Baranet Kris Derrig tribute guitar amongst a sea of green Epiphones and felt Top Hats. All of them in front of me in line.

A good friend of mine, who used to play in LA Guns still owns an apartment on the other side fo the back parking lot on N. Clark behind the Whiskey. I told him my plan and he gave me the key to his apartment so I could stash the guitar safely once I was done with my failed Autograph attempt. He said, "...dude, you're crazy, it's not gonna happen and then what are you gonna do? Put the guitar in your trunk?"

Knowing I had at least a place to stash the guitar I decide to hang out in line in the hot sun. For September, LA at 3pm in Hollywood has no mercy. After a while of that pent up super fan and agro autograph hound energy, I was about to give up and just go stash the guitar in my friends apartment. Then Slash's black Escalade pulled into the back parking spaces behind The Whiskey and of course the fans went nuts. What was initially an organized, well formed line turned into every fan and groupie for themselves. The pleading and begging. Slash cool as can be, protected by personal and club security, jogged around the back of his car and up the back stairs of The Whiskey. Mid way up he stops turned back around to the crowd and says, "...sorry folks, there are just way too many of you and I have to get to rehearsal. I'd be here all day signing." He points to a guy with a guitar and says "...hey I just signed for you yesterday." (Slash had played Kimmel). He then turns runs up the stairs and disappears into the Whiskey.

At this point Security tells the crowd, "..if you dont have a ticket you need to leave the sidewalk and if you do you need to line up in front of the club!"

I decide to walked across the street to keep my eye on the back door. Slash's Driver was still in the vehicle, and it was now backed in ready to leave at a moments notice. My hunch was that Slash was gonna need to eat before the show. Soon all the disappointed fans left. They must have believed what The Whiskey security told the crowd... that Slash was in the for the night and not leaving till after the show.

From across the street I see a guy with a SLASH feat. Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators shirt on wearing "All Access" laminate. Having worked as a guitar tech on tours, I knew this was my only chance to implement my backup plan. I approach him start to chat him up. "...Hey man, how's the tour going? What job are you doing on the tour?" Etc. Turns out he's the lighting guy. Seeing me with my guitar case, he asks what's in the case and I show him the "Max", he's like "...wo. sweet guitar man."

I then ask him, "...listen can you do me a favor" Quickly responding, "...look man I'm just the LD." I say, "...I know I know, can you just give this T-shirt to Slash? It's a gift." He asks me, "...who should I say it's from?" I say, it doesn't matter. Its a gift FANS are always asking and taking from artists. Im just trying to gift it forward. And who this gift is from doesn't matter. He gives me that smile and says sure man.

Before he left I said, "...all I ask is that you come back out and let me know he has it. Thats all I want."
He says to me, "...dude thats really cool of you. I'll see what I can do. If I get it to him, I'll do my best to come back out and tell you."
He turns and runs up the back stairs just like Slash and he disappears into the Clubs back door.

IMG_3558.jpg

The LD came out and confirmed, that not only did Slash get the T-Shirt but that he loved it.
He was surprised that Slash reacted that way, but I wasn't. He had to run back in for Sound Check.
My plan was now in motion but would my super rare last photo of the Dragon in 1969 (think Heartbreaker and Stairway Solo) come through?

Two hours later, right around dinner time, a body guard started down the back stairs, with a few security guys from the club and then followed Slash.
The driver now gets out of the escalade and opens the rear door for him. With about 7-8 autograph hounds still waiting, die hards with about other 5 guitars & guy with a cheap Top Hat and another with some photos and albums. Again all the guitars being waved in the air were Epiphone Les Pauls. Ironically my "Max" ( who none of these guys out there, know who Max or Derrig is) was the only one with a Gibson logo, and it was also a NON Gibson and yes I find this just as amusing.

Dropping my MONO "Go Play" gig bag on the sidewalk, I walk into the middle of N. Clark holding the Max up, as Slash comes down the stairs, I was behind at least 3 green and 2 amber Epiphone Les Pauls and everyone else. The security line is strong and nobody is getting past these guys. As Slash continues he's ignoring everyone. He heads straight for the Escalade, goes around the back of the car and steps up into the vehicle and puts his one hand up on the roof the other on top of the open door and stands up.

Then it happens, he points over everyone, at me with his own Silver Sharpie and says, "...I'll sign that guitar and that guys hat." Of course Security has no idea what he is saying and he says it again to his security guy, "..That guy, that guy with the shirt and that guys hat. thats it."

Of course one guy is trying go past the security guard with a guitar anyway and Slash again, as Im still trying to get there from the back, "...No, not him" and again he points at me and tells the security guard "...that guy". I walk around the back of everyone, walk past the guards and Slash is Now at the back door of his Escalade. I hand him the Guitar and flip it over and say, "...Thank you SLASH. Please, be careful this is a "MAX" just sign back of the Headstock."

As I hold it out for him he signs it and jumps in the Escalade and closes the Door. I'm now walking back to get the gig bag and all I can hear is guys banging on the window, begging... "...Please just one more" His window is closed and his driver pulls out slow not to run anyone over and they drive away. At this point all I can do is snap a few quick shots of the autograph with the Escalade pulling away.

IMG_3562-2sm.jpg
You can see one of the unlucky one's holding out a sharpie before he pulls away in this picture.

IMG_3563-2sm.jpg

Notice the Derrig inspired Serial number on the back of the headstock, Slash's signature and Slash driving away in his Escalade in the Background.

I then stashed the guitar in my friends apartment, met my luthier buddy up front. To Top off the night, ACE got us each a stage used pick after the show.
Here's my haul for that night.

The funny thing is, the Derrig was never "given" to slash, only lent to him, but the guy has light fingers & simply kept it. Alan Niven never pressed the issue. Slash did the same with the SIR #36 amp, however they did press the issue & took it back the first time they knew where it was. I believe he also simply "kept" one of the Max guitars.
Apart from the luthiery, what set the Derrig guitars apart was the woods they were constructed from. He would scour the country for very old & desirable (recycled) timber. I believe some of the wood for slash's guitar was recycled from a very old barn door.
It did have original PAF's in it at first, but Chris wouldn't part with them & put the Duncan's in it before letting Alan Niven take it. Hasn't the neck been repaired like 5 times or something. It was repaired a few times at least during the original tour. Cheers

I've heard two different stories about Alan Niven discovering the Derrig.

According to the Owner of Guitars R US [Howie Hubberman]
"...just to clarify if anyone is interested. There has been and still is some confusion about the Replica Les Pauls that Slash has and does own from back in the early days of the band. The short story version is that he had 4. 2 were made by Peter "Max" Baranet and 2 were made by Kris Derrig, both of whom were guitar builders in Southern California. 1 of the Max guitars, The HUNTER burst, was lost by Slash to a pawn shop and later sold. Slash still has the 3 others.
The Steve "HUNTER" burst was built by Peter "Max" Baranet. That guitar was sold out of my guitar shop "Guitars R Us" back in the mid 1980's. It was 1 of 2 Max-made Les Pauls that Slash acquired from my shop. Slash also acquired 2 hand-made replica Les Pauls that were made by Kris Derrig. The band's manager back at that time, Alan Niven owned a Derrig-Made replica LP of his own and brought it into the studio during the Appetite recordings. Slash gave it a test drive and really connected with it. He later sought out and purchased 1 for himself as well as acquired the guitar that Alan owned. If i have photos of any of these instruments, I will try to post some in the near future."

According to Peter "Max" Baranet. Posted by Max on the Les Paul Forum
"...Guns-n-Roses lived and rehearsed in a garage in the alley behind my shop in Hollywood. I knew these guys before Guns-n-Roses ever formed. One Friday afternoon Slash came in with a friend of mine. He had just been signed to a record deal and was supposed to start recording their first record on Monday. Slash didn't have a guitar, any guitar! And he knew I made 'bursts' and wanted one. I had nothing finished. He kept pressing me to help him out somehow. Finally I told him all I had that was finished was my personal 'burst'. I let him take it on loan. He came back the following week and said he loved it and wanted to buy it. He did not want the original 50's parts that were on it so he had them removed and newer parts put on. This is the guitar he used in the studio.

The Derrig 'burst' was purchased later and was used on tour. it is the one in all the photos. it is the one he refers to as his 'main guitar' as, at that time, it was his main live guitar until he bought that ugly 80's Gibson. He keeps my guitar locked away in storage and only brings it out to record with. this is his main recording guitar. His interviews are vague and confusing but, I know because I was there and I still hang out with Slash every once in awhile. Sorry to differ with your story but that's the way it happened."

Keep the faith, Max

I've come to the conclusion that the history is somewhere in the middle. For once I'ld like to hear Alan or Jim Foot tell the story.

As for how many Derrig's Slash owns vs Max's
The caption below this photo that appeared in Premier Guitar and was also provided says...

3f7bcc2f-2974-442c-b9c4-db8c2d23ca17.JPG

According to luthier Roman Rist, the middle Les Paul replica here is Slash's first from luthier Kris Derrig.
the one Rist says Slash used on the tail end of Appetite.
The guitar on the right was built by Peter "Max" Baranet.
The instrument on the left is purportedly Slash's second Derrig model.

That is two Derrig's NOT Two Max's as Robert pointed out earlier in this thread.

Also there was for a time much debate about who built the Hunter Burst...
Max or Derrig. Last I read from Scott Sheldon, it was Derrig. With Max claiming he doesn't remember the Hunter Burst.
And guys like Rist saying it was Max.

Before I bought the Max Derrig Tribute, I had a line on a Derrig and I had a solid offer in. Someone else bought it for Max Prices without the Vintage hardware and that guy has now reached out to me asking if Im interested.

Honestly knowing I have a Max built from the same billet of wood, with the Derrig SD APH1's signed by Slash...
I'm good for now.

Very cool story bro.
I enjoyed the read .
Cheers Mitch

Robert thank you for your thread and taking the time to honor Kris Derrig and Peter "Max" Baranet in your posts.

I really enjoyed finding this forum and reading your thread. I was thrilled to see my guitar in your post.
I really haven't had a chance to post the story how how it was autographed by Slash to this extent anywhere.

I feel honored to have a guitar that Peter "Max" Baranet built with Western Maple that he sourced from the same place, Dale Hardwoods Warehouse on El Monte in South Los Angeles and at the same time as Kris Derrig & Jim Foote. For it then to have pickups custom wound by "MJ" (Marciela Juarez) the head of the Seymour Duncan Custom shop to the exact spec of Slash's Derrig pickups as installed by Jim Foot, a NUT carved and installed by Andy Brauer as on Slash's Derrig, finish work by Scott Sheldon of MCi Custom Shop Guitars, someone who has done a lot of controversial research on Kris Derrig, Real Vintage Gibson Burst hardware and finally Slash signing it... thats a lot of hours in aging materials, time spent in skill development and famous hands to grace this guitar, It's an honor to play it.

Max built this guitar for Slash Fans while honoring the work of Kris Derrig, lets never forget Slash is the one who really created the Myth of this guitar with his playing and he continues to deliver music, magick and grace to his fans world wide.

He really is a great musician and awesome human being.

So not sure how to post this, but I have to say that a tragedy took place during the installation of original Gibson burst kluson deluxe tuners and the 2019 Slash autograph was smudged. So much so that it had to be wiped clean off the back of the headstock.

Here's what the original autograph looked like right before the smudge.

Scott Sheldon who was working on the guitar at the time called Slash and asked him as a personal favor if he would please redo the autograph.
What did Slash say.... YES!

Scott returned the guitar to me and basically said when Slash's schedule allows, expect a call from his assistant. Honestly I've been working in the music business for 25 years and I know how artists, artist managers assistants etc., can be when a SuperStar at Slash's level can get busy and right now he's busy.

This was a few months ago. Of course Slash has been busy with preparing for his upcoming tour and he leaves tomorrow.
So I've been waiting and waiting and finally the day came when Slash knocked out a bunch of things on his to do list and this was one of them.

So yesterday Slash sent his assistant to my house to pick up the guitar and within 1 day she returned it to me with a brand new autograph!!!

IMG_89A039C64922-1.jpeg

Slash is by far the best autograph experience I've ever had. Scott may have made a mistake, but Slash could have easily said no considering he now knew full well what the guitar was. When he signed the guitar the first time in 2019, Slash picked the guitar out of the crowd and it was the only one he signed that day.

Why he chose this guitar I'll never really know for sure. It may have been because of the reverse Derrig inspired Chevron flame pattern, with the vintage correct top hats and Zebra PUPs or it could have been because of the Jimmy Page T-Shirt I was wearing that he was just gifted backstage by me through his lighting tech.
What he couldn't have known at that time, was that the guitar was a Max built Derrig tribute.

Scott Sheldon, by far is the single most authority on Kris Derrig and Max Baranet guitars. His collection of these instruments alone puts him in a category of luthier unlike anyone else. Without Scott, I would not have the new photo of Max holding the guitar Max built and because of Scotts relationship with Slash,
Slash re-autographing it is priceless.

So yesterday Slash sent his assistant to my house to pick up the guitar and within 1 day she returned it to me with a brand new autograph!!!

The Replicas that are better than the genuine Gibson. Glad you got that worked out!!@!@!!

Great story, but about that tuner install……:run:

Yeah, I know. Honestly, I should have left it alone and or even went for tuners that work better than actual Burst hardware.
I have a set of Locking vintage style Single line Kluson replicas with an amazing turning ratio on another guitar that I'm like why didn't do this sooner?

I should have arranged for the protective overspray way sooner and now I know better.

It was the second graph I've lost. The first was to overspraying with a protective coat. Angus Young graph RIP.

So now I'm testing several water based protection sealers with no Alcohol and other poop that eats paint pen.
