Guys ask me why I like Gibson replicas. I remember all my heroes played Gibson's and I avowed to have one too someday. However, after buying 5 brand new Gibson's - and then needing to invest additional $$$ to correct bad fretboards, bad frets and/or noisy electronics - i got tired of all the extra expense and time required to make the instruments usable.

I've even played R9's recent that had uneven frets and played local radio stations when plugged in.

This is where Kris Derrig found his niche.

Back in the 1980's, few musicians could afford the expensive Gibson's, even though they cost less then than now, it was often more than many players could afford.

For a fraction of the cost of an original, you could have a Derrig 59 Gibson Les Paul, with premium electronics, pickups and without 30 years (as of 1989) of wear and abuse.

This is why I love the Gibson replicas. They look great on stage, have excellent sound and feel and can be replaced economically.

When I play expensive Gibson Custom Shop models that still need fretwork and still suffer from EFI/RFI, I am reminded why I prefer function over form.

I'm currently looking to add a 59 Les Paul to our lineup.

My Mom's documented - all original - 1979 Les Paul Custom.

Me and Mom's 1979 Custom. Nice Guitar, but needs fretwork, plays a local radio station when plugged in, the usual Gibson anomalies...

The Von Herndon Stagecrafter (#12 of 24) that Mom traded me the Les Paul Replica for on the left.
She liked the family name on the headstock and the thicker, 1.00" neck profile on the Von Herndon:
