Ye Olde Brown SG Club

My impressions: it was the first time Iplugged it into my gigging rig, with my Fender valve amp.

it ain't as balanced as the first one. The bass is a bit muddy and the neck pickup is DEFINITELY muddy compared to the bridge.

Y'know, Sergio, an SG with mini-humbuckers may be more appropriate to your needs. They can still develop a lot of crunch, but don't have issues with muddiness. I find that I have to make fewer adjustments to my rig when going back and forth between my Strat and my '74 SG.

What pickups does yours have? I know you've told us, but I don't remember.

Anyway,

Here's an informal little clip I've made with my '74 SG Special, with mini-humbuckers. It gives you some sense of the sound.

This is just me goofing around with some random rhythm stuff:

I've also posted this a few times, but this is also done with my '74. Its just the intro riff to Enter Sandman. Again, you can get a sense of the versatility of minis.

Just a thought...

It's got 57s, Smitty

Really?

And they're muddy?

Hmmm...I have '57s in my other SG and they're brighter than some of my other humbuckers.

Do you think the issue is more a matter of the contrast between your Strat and the SG?

Sergio, check Pickup height adjustments. These are very much a key to getting good sound from your humbuckers in an SG.

That. I think all it needs is some pup height adjustment, regarding the muddiness

Another thing is check the pot specs. Most people agree, 500K will be less muddy than 300k.
I think Gib has gone to 500K's in the newer SG's by now.

I had 57 Classics and the neck was muddy. I sold them.

Sergio...do you have a PCB???

Now I'm using a low impedance GFS PAF clone (7.9/7.8) with a Tone Man vintage harness K40Y Russian Tone Caps (.033uf bridge/.015uf neck) and it sounds amazing.

When I start playing it clean at Guitar Sinner, everyone comes over and asks to play it or wants to know what pickups/electronics it has...it sounds better, more clear and vibrant than any of the Gibson's they have in stock.

I am sorry to say that this Gibson SG was useless until I changed out the PCB and Gibson pickups.

Ok...the relation of my bridge pickup to my strings was bothering me. I cut the adjustment springs in half and slightly twisted the pickup mounting ears so the pickup would follow the string angle off the bridge.

I debated on adding the bridge pickup trim ring, but decided not to only because I didn't want the exposed screw tips near my wiring.

Once I got the angle right (which didn't take much) I reassembled, setting everything back to pre-modification measurements. I then set the pole pieces on the bridge to Gibson's 4/64" recommendations.

Haven't had a chance to try it out just yet, but if you compare the beforehand after photos, there's a big change in pickup height...

I will need to rebalance my pickups tomorrow....

Played the first gig with the SG.

Not many good pics but...

Since I have been gigging with SSS Strats like forever, it was VERY tough to tame this beast at first.

Playing a guitar is NOT the same thing in every situation.

Playing at home, jamming in a garage, gigging in a small bar and gigging with PA, mic'd amps at a large place are ENTIRELY different things.

I still hadn't had an actual idea of how this guitar sounds when the amp is cranked up LOUD.

Dude, after I dialed in the right tone, it was a monster gig.

Cool, Sérgio! Do you feel the change of guitars made the band sound very different?
