Ye Olde Brown SG Club

let me tell you about my baybee... you know she come around...
about one meter long... from her head to the ground.
And her name is SG!

Actually, my guitar's name is Luna. She was the first electric guitar I bought
since I was about 17... a long time ago in a galaxy far away. I played almost
my whole career with one acoustic (later two) and one bass. I have some
excellent instruments, so I didn't feel I needed anything else. *grins

But I fell for this guitar like a ton of bricks in 2008, and it's eight years later and I
haven't changed my mind. I read other guys posts where they find fault with their
instruments, and I just feel sorry for them. Mine's been a very happy relationship.
This SG just behaves herself. I have other guitars I play, but Luna is the Queen of
my music room. Every time I play this guitar, when I put her back on her stand,
it's with the spoken or unspoken thought: "What a great guitar."

I've modded this instrument with all the best of everything I could buy or make...
Like a man in love, buying fine clothes for his paramour. And I am in love with the sound
and the feel of this instrument. She makes me happy when I'm playing her. Some guys
resent having to spend money on a Gibson... but for me, it's been a joy. She responds
so well to attention like this. A responsive lover is a fantasy for most people. Lucky me,
I'm blessed with this subtle beauty. She brings out the best in me. And that my friends,
is priceless.

With an intro like that you should rename her "Gloria"!

Well what would a Ye Olde Brown SG Club thread be without Burla?

This guitar right here is the one that inspired me to give Burla her make over.

I've been in love with Luna and Burla since I saw them. One day I would love to treat my Special with a wood pickguard, cavity cover and truss rod cover too.
Apart from the fact I'm crap at working wood, I woodent err... wouldn't know what wood to use... Decisions, decisions... ;)

May I suggest Eucalyptus Marginata Alex. Something reflective of where you live:

Yep. I think Jarrah would be my choice too. It's plentiful and has a really nice reddish colour to it. I think it would be perfect...
I think I'll be having a look around for suitably sized scraps next time I'm down south on holiday...

I've used ebony headstock overlay veneer from Stewmac to make various items of guitar trim.

Dunno if they ship to Oz, but if they don't, you could look at what's supplied to cabinet makers in your area.
The ebony veneer I've gotten from Stewmac is about 3mm thick, so it works well for pick guards and truss rod covers,
and control cavity covers.

Some other wood veneer from a cabinet maker's supply house ought to work fine. I like the idea of using
something native to your area. That concept makes me want to use wild cherry, or sugar maple, or birch.
Luna's walnut pick guard is my piece de resistance.

Sorry, the SG here isn't brown, but the illustration of technique would work
fine for a brown one.
