Wise words from Shane

I have 3 guitars that I very rarely use... I've been thinking about selling, but I haven't decided yet... This pushed me one step closer.

I have bought and sold so much I could never remember it all. The process, as it was for me, is one of acquiring gear for what purpose I required at that time. As time goes on my requirements change and I eventually move gear out and get new gear to fill in the blanks. There are certain tools that I will never part with because they perform basic functionality I will always need, but there's far more gear I get to play around with and form my own opinions about how it will work in my environment and workflow.

I have recently gone thru a gear purge myself as I transition to the next phase in my life where I no longer have the disposable income, nor the space to store all the gear I want. I no longer host a bi-weekly jam session so there is no use for most of the studio gear any longer. I don't feel I've wasted money though since I was able to sell that gear for cash and whatever loss I took would've been far less than renting that gear for so long. Sometimes a viral video might cause one of my pedals to skyrocket in price so I get paid to play it. I now have firsthand knowledge of a lot of gear, and what works for me and what doesn't, in a real world scenario. I always keep the boxes for max resale value.

I am still in the purge phase and need to get rid of many more guitars, but annoyingly enough, they're worth more with the original pickups than what I've put in them. So I need to sort out all my guitars and swap the originals back in. I've got about 40, only a dozen or so of which I will be keeping.

So yeah, only keep what you use. Needs do shift and sometimes it's just hard to acknowledge when that shift has happened.

My life has been one constant phase of having no disposable income. :D I did sell off all my PA gear a few years ago when my health finally stopped me being able to take it out.

I hear ya. I was only flush with cash for about a decade then it started to teeter off as the IT field matured and everyone is learning to code now. Youngsters will work for less than half of what I would ask for with my experience and experience don't seem to count for much anymore in the era of outsourced HR. Only a degree will get you even the most casual interest for a position. Needless to say I had to downsize in every aspect of the word, except my waistline...
Going through that right now. I've been doing contract IT work out of my home for 20 years. Mostly designing and managing small 10 - 100 user networks. Because of the pandemic most of my clients moved to remote workers and/or the cloud. I've had to take on a part time job at Home Depot to supplement my income. I plan to retire in a few years. The IT work is enough to live on but not enough to save for retirement. I've been slowly purging gear. Still have quite a bit to go. Eventually we will be downsizing and I can't see letting gear sit in storage.

The question is , you have to ask yourself is do i need it, or do i just want it. In recent years I realize i don't need many of the things i have now and i have started selling some of these items off. Some may think the Boy with the most toys wins. You can have lots of toys , but if they are not getting used what's the purpose for keeping them, just money sitting around collecting dust. My way of thinking now, is lower my equipment or goods to free up more space, less items i have to keep dusted and less maintenance. When you sell you make back some cash and hopefully the buyer will get some good use out of the equipment, its a win win for me. Makes life a little easier. .

Didn't he say? He's usually very up front when it comes to disclosing whether it's a paid review or not.
He thanks them for "sending it out" .... but I dont think he ever sys its a PAID video.

His comments in the AMpero video also contradict his personal "findings" ..... I like Shane not busting his balls (even though he talks funny ) just showing how the conflicting information can certainly permiate the airwaves so to speak.

buy-- try-- and create your OWN opinions...... and your own unique tones that make you smile .......... sod the rest :)

I have a 60.00 VOX Pathfinder SS amp 10 watts 6.5 inch speaker -- throw a reverb pedal in front and it makes me gigle every time I play it because it just sounds WONDERFUL
to me
in my ROOM
and for my uses

would it play the Hollywood Bowl fronting for Motley Crew ??? no never -- what MORON would compare the gear needed for THAT with the gear used for Sunday afternoon noodling in a small spare bedroom???? -- sadly the answer to that is the MAJORITY OF PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET -- :(

I live to play music, so I'm not into acquiring gear. I just need enough to perform.
