I've always thought Ringo is a great rock drummer.
His style is totally unique IMHO. So I'm not surprised that he's misunderstood.
When the Beatles needed rock solid, Ringo provided it.
When they got stratospheric, he stepped up.
When there were too many big egos in the studio, Ringo laid down
the beat. Which was the point. Sometimes the drummer brings home
the ship. (actually a lot of the time).
The Beatles created some of the most unusual and interesting music of
the 20th century... and there was a lot of really interesting music recorded
during that time. Not everybody digs it, that's fine. But a lot of it ages very
well, compared to other music of their time. They did fine covers in their early
days, which I've always enjoyed. And their original songs have been covered
by almost everybody.
But drummers in cover bands have a hard time playing like Ringo.
And that's okay... even Ringo would say, play like yourself, not like me.
