Which amps to use...

We are back in the studio next weekend to record our second single. I am ponderimg which amps and guitars to take. The other guitarist's mom passed away so I will be recording her parts as well. I am debating the JVM to cover all the things without hauling amps around but still wonder about the 4010 for one track. Not sure if it will be gainy enough for what I want amd by the time I run an OD I could just use the JVM.

One track is a kind of chunking on the upper strings D sus4 type of thing. Thinkjng maybe 800 for that track. Still needs to have a good chunky A to Bm in there too. Likely LP burst.
Second track is more sustainjng single open chords so maybe that will be better with the 800. I was thinking the Jubilee. Need some articulation in chorus. I think I will use my Goya L6-S for that track just so that I can have it recorded on somethjng that potentially is on the radio. That guitar has been my buddy since 1978 and it deserves it!

The other tracks are short guitar fill tracks. Might be some whammy so the Yamaha RGX that the wife bought me in the 80s.

This will be fun! I will play this week amd see what wins!

I think you should use the Marshall!

I would always go with a pure tube sound, crank the amp and overdrive the output tubes.
There is no effects pedal which sounds as good for recording compared to a cranked tube amp.
Also the speaker is very important to get a good sound on the recording (avoid using direct or line out).
Like
if I used a Peavey speaker compared to a EVM or a JBL, etc...the Peavey sounds like a jet plane with asthma.
The up scale Celestions are a good choice for the saturation.

The microphone is critical and I would never use a SM 57/58 for recording guitar.

800 in the zone & the JVM with it. pretty much have old & new covered

I notice lately when i go newer than JMP or 800, hear a more modern gain sound which is cool if its the application one is looking for. Last song didn't boost a DSL or JMP used togethe. The DSL had the little bit of sizzle & the JMP had the fullness., together they complimented. Did the DSL first but when i put the JMP with it..the sound got much more depth, used Green backs( upper mid cut & speaker cmpressin)75( super tight & has what the 30 & greenie doesn't)) & Marshall Vintage 30(fill it all in) on the mic's

less is more in gain for fullness sure am learning lately, especially at the rhythm parts... gain it up on leads but not near as much as i used to use Slowly learning to capture it all better.

The TSL is the retarded brother of the great DSL.
True enough lol

I believe Jethro's TSL is the 602 though, iirc, and shouldn't be retarded like my TSL is lol

Something else just crossed my mind as well...if he's recording the other guitar player's parts too, would it not be a good idea to use a different amp/guitar combo than he will for his own parts? Give it a little bit of contrast?

I was joking of course. :rolf:

We had a studio mule JCM800 die last night. We were running it wide open in an isolation cabiney for hours and it quit abruptly, without fanfare.

I plugged in my main 2017 DSL40C (retubed to my specs and adjusted for my tastes) and hooked it up to the isloation box.

The engineer and producer kept looking at each other while i was tracking. When i was finished, they both commented on how much better the overall guitar tone was with the DSL40C, even without my signature pedalboard.

They had me go back and retrack all the parts played on the JCM800.

I never change amps personally. I run the same one all the time. But, i will play through whatever the producer/engineer wants, even if it doesn't sound great to me.

Can you run through a few soundcheck recordings (gear demos basically) and "see" what sounds best????

The dead JCM is shown in this photo...

What's that extra knob do?

Dude has all the mics he uses a studio vocal mic. I will use tube amps but not be able to crank it for power tube distortion. The majority of my tones are from preamp any ways. Yes, I am one of those. I may take the Jubilee mini amd crank it in 5 watt mode. Possibly nail the 4010 thru an Iso cab amd run another speaker for me attenuated. It's a beautiful, professional studio but it is in his basement. Knock the dishes off the counter!

Mine is the 122 so it has real speakers in it. Never had an issue. Yes, it sounds really good might do that too. He has a 1x12 iso cab but I also need a speaker in the live room for me, period. I may bring my 2x12 to go with the JVM410.
And yes, I want to use 2 different amps or at minimum 2 diff channels on the 410 . Might as well ise 2 amps. Possibly use ch 3 on the JVM for the lead fills n things.

I will just use what I think fits the song, I woild say miced properly any of my amps should do the trick for this song. I stand in the live room when I record, it's how I do so I need that speaker in there with me. It is how I best capture me, I have played live standing up for 40 years.

Got to use the technique that works best for you.

I know so many guys with old 2203's and they can't keep them running long enough to finish a session...but they insist on keeping them.
