What's your all-time favorite metal album?

Though by their own words they are a rock n roll band, in fairness, they WOULD be Hard Rock i suppose. But they are one of those bands i mentioned before, that walk the fine line of A/B and often metal guys will openly accept them. Motorhead was the same exact way with Lemmy saying " We Are Motorhead, We Play Rock N Roll' but then they carried a LOT of metal traits and sound. Thin Lizzy, UFO, Van Halen had this same situation going on as well.

Not metal in the traditional sense in fairness, but they have a lot of the checklist parts: loud, heavy guitars/drums/bass, a strong frontman vocalist, wrote about musical topics considered taboo and had the imagery.

AC/DC was for me personally, the direct pathway towards heavy metal and the blueprints to things much heavier and more extreme. They were my introduction into that sort of music i guess
As I said before, we have my self and almost all TTR members here different definition of metal. I know those band put foundation of what metal is today but, they are not metal bands.

Neither, Motorhead, UFO, AC/DC and so on....

so what you are saying is , AC/DC and Megadeth should be in same category? or Motorhead and Testament? UfO and Slayer? See where Im going with this? :)

now lecture me why they belong together lol

No..:D

I guess I stayed away from Metal because the songs were so depressing. Death Metal was never ever in range.
to be honest most metal music sucks for me, death, grind core, nu metal, folk metal, symphony metal, djent and so on... I like Thrash but even in thrash metal there are so much unlistenable poop.....

I like depressing, doom and gloom, I hate happy music.

If you recheck the comment, i said specifically that AC/DC was Hard Rock and everyone of those other bands mentioned behind them. They are outlets to metal and are closely related without any question but are not "metal" in the strictest sense.

But the question is: what IS metal? Right now according to Wikipedia, there are at least 71 subgenres of metal alone. That includes things such as Unblack Metal, Nu Metal, Rap Metal, Blackened Crust Punk, Kawaii Metal and even Glam Metal. There are more subgenres growing everyday. If these are labeled as metal, then surely to god, harder rock bands such as Motorhead, AC/DC have their place among this.

What are the prerequisites for metal? Who gets to label them? What are their credentials?

Though i can find something in nearly any genre of music that i like, i tend to sway towards and stick to the classic rock/hard rock/metal things. Inside of those categories, there are some parts that im not a fan of either at the same time overall. Things such as Death Metal, Black Metal and their subcategories often aren't what im after. I still appreciate what they can do musically and some are insanely talented, specifically Black Metal and Death Metal Drummers.

But the metal i enjoy most, very often, isn't depressing or melancholic. Quite the opposite really. It might be dark sounding at times but the lyrical content is either steeped in historical subjects, overcoming struggles and adversity or referencing a movie even lol

Id be a liar if i said i dont listen to things that can be darker but that goes all the way back to the days of Black Sabbath singing about the Apocalypse in War Pigs or Electric Funeral. Sometimes in interesting to listen the more off-beat subjects to as it is watching a horror movie.

Actually, I would put Motὂrhead in Testament in the same category. When Motὂrhead first started, everyone was calling them "thrash metal" to come up with a dumb pigeon hole title. They influenced the next wave of metal bands like Metallica, Testament, Slayer, and many others. If there was no Motὂrhead, there would have been none of the other bands coming along later. Same as it took about 25 years for metal singers to get more gravelly sounding than Lemmy. Yeah, Lemmy said they were a Rock and Roll band, and they could play a real loud and heavy version of a Little Richard song, but they paved the road many would soon follow. Everything about Motὂrhead was heavy metal.

I have no argument about them paving the way and influencing many bands that followed but I don’t consider Motorhead metal band. Its more like punk mixed rock and roll.

;)
