Yeah, I was just thinking... and also being a smartaas… but maybe that nut wassn't perfectly seated from the factory. And over time, the string tension won and as a result those exaggerated finish cracks have appeared.Nope. Not yet. It doesn't show any signs of looseness aside from the finish cracks...
String change day is coming, it'll get looked over real good then for sure. Until then, it's playing just fine.

Explorer’s are very comfortable to play sitting, standing, V’s are a little bit neck heavy, but a wide strap takes care of that, no different than an SG.looks like paint on the edges of the nut cracking or flaking off.
Hope thats all it is.
If it was me I wouldnt be typing I would have a string winder in my hand spinning down and investigating.
Hey you,
Yeah YOU! ....
Fellas with explorers and / or Vee - how do they balance - pretty even / neck heavy?
Explorer - how does that feel seated?
God I want one of each and a Firebird to boot!!
I dont GAS away from the dang computer; I bond closely with most of my guitars each evening and never have a thought of wishing I had "better" equipment in my hands.

Personally, I REALLY like the way the V sits and balances, even moreso than the explorer. It's comfy....can't really sit too well with one though, unless you got a barstool or something similar. I'm always standing though. The explorer is actually really well balanced too, and that one you can sit with. I let LRT play the explorer to see if he liked the sound, as opposed to his own Epi '84 explorer, and he hasn't given it back yet lollooks like paint on the edges of the nut cracking or flaking off.
Hope thats all it is.

Thank you, gball.....def puts my mind at ease...It’s totally normal, and the nut IS NOT coming loose. Nitrocellulose lacquer shrinks a bit over time, and all you are seeing is the clearcoat finish separating from the side of the nut. This happens on pretty much any Gibson that has some finish on the end of the nut.

Is the nut, like, literally coming off? What might cause this? Also, how to fix?

Pretty sure that didn't happen lol"What's happening to my nut?!"
I Beg your pardon?
"Is the nut, like, literally coming off?
This type damage happens when the guitar is knocked over.
It lands flat on the face of the guitar, hitting the floor.
This causes the nut to crack off, as above.
This looks just like that type of damage.
What you want to do is take the guitar to a luthier....
Somebody knocked your guitar onto the floor. It landed on the nut face down. This guitar hasn't left the jam room in several months....I would think that drastic and immediate changes in temp/humidity would do something like this....but I don't think it's seen anything too crazy for some time...is it common to see finish fractures around nuts like this?
No! Stahp saying that!Somebody knocked your guitar onto the floor. It landed on the nut face down.
@Robert Herndon
You have any input, mister?
No worries Robert, I am pretty sure that it's just the nitro. The nut seems to be pretty well stuck in place.Sorry, Man...been busy!!@!!
Good suggestions here. Just a dab of wood glue is good. I never use super glue on nuts...
No! Stahp saying that!

I don't really think the nut itself is the problem, just the nitro finish around the ends of it. Even then, it's not affecting playability, so it's essentially a non problem. Just had me worried about it when I first saw itEither that or:
something banged into the face of the guitar really hard. Like the force of a hammer blow.
This type nut problem does not just happen by itself.
Have a luthier check it all over...
and the cracks can be filled (clear fingernail polish) is lacquer and is handy if you are trying to fix it yourself.

No I do not.Do you have a Luthier that you work with?
Priceless.
