What’s on the Grill

It's been awhile since I have done any of those. I bet my kids wouldn't remember it, which could make for a fun dinner one night - everyone gets their own little chicken!

One time I took a couple of quail out of the backyard with a pellet gun, my daughter really liked eating those lol

They were pretty good too
Love me some Quail, been a long time though!

Well the bird is at 167°F in the thigh, and the smoker is building heat fast, hit 400°F just now....no flames though...

I might be in trouble lol

This thing doesn't actually have any vents...it was designed to be electric but there's no art in electric...so I use fire. Like a man.

Well.....just stay on top of things, and you’re gonna be ok.... ;)

I had to unstack the whole thing for a minute

I think my wood dried up and caught fire as soon as I opened it up and introduced some air, so I took that :poo: out lol

Just before I took the wood out

Here's the bird as it looks now, still has a few minutes left methinks...

I think I am going to mod this Brinkmann...as I mentioned, it was designed to be an electric smoker, so the bottom looks like this, and there's supposed to be an element that sits in the bottom of the pan, like this battery charger is here:

20200621_111231.jpg

There's an inner pan to the whole thing that sits in the base...

20200621_111153.jpg

I plan to drill holes every few inches all the way around both parts...and maybe a few in the bottom of the inner pan...I had to Jimmy rig a couple old grates to hold the coal bed a couple of inches off the bottom of the inner pan

20200621_092755.jpg

And it sits in there like so:

20200621_092852.jpg

Kinda hoping I can eliminate this altogether if I drill around the sides and some out of the bottom.

This smoker has a water "pan" more like a bowl, that has been long used and it doesn't hold water anymore, so I will put dirt in it, and then sink a different pan into the soil...seems to work alright....Jimmy Riggs was happy with it, anyway
...

Then that whole mess goes inside

20200621_093012.jpg20200621_093016.jpg

Then you stack everything on the base (where I want to drill holes) slap the lid on and smoke away.

Problem is, I haven't come up with a vent system yet. I need to be able to cut the airflow back, or open it up..not quite sure how I will accomplish this yet...

Re. Getting a new one. Mine started out red. Over the years got pretty rusted out like yours. Cleaned it up. Painted the firebox part with high heat black and got creative on the upper.

That said. It’s time for me to trade up to something like one of those offset firebox jobs.

Yeah, pretty much exactly like yours, even started red too.

My element would get too hot and would trip the gfci, ..then eventually burned itself apart, so I've been using it like a non electric for some time now.

Was thinking of painting mine like an R2 Unit

But black is probably easier and less cheesy lol

I still need to figure out some kind of venting

I kinda wanna build one. This one's my dad's, he built it himself. Offset, reverse flow,...it's pretty nice, and extra heavy duty

Damn battery........already. This might take a little longer than I thought

Not sure why I bothered marking anything, I'm just going to eyeball it anyway. Kinda gonna be hard to ruin this thing...but it can still get better

Sitting here waiting for my battery to charge, I may have figured out my "vent system"

I'll drill only the bottom of the fire pan...not the sides. I might enlarge the hole in the side of the outer part, the base, and fashion some kind of hatch/door/doohickey that I can either close to cover the hole, or open for flow...

Or I could turn the inner part so the holes don't align to impede flow...

20200621_140614.jpg

but that seems rather inconvenient, especially when hot

The idea that air is drawn through the side of the outer part, and then up through the bottom of the inner part...

That’s hilarious. After I painted mine up and shared on FB. One of my FB friends suggested I should have done R2D2.
