Well so here it is ----I have this
purple people eater.jpg
WIth a low dollar (18.99 free shipping) Dog ear P90 and in BACK TO BACK tests versus my stock Gibson pick up loaded Les Paul JR.......well....the low end -- bolt neck PURPLE PEOPLE EATER ---flat out slayed the Jr on every level of tone-- period---

SO -- I ordered a GuitarMadness dog ear -- on ebay -- actually got 2 for 23.99 delivered---
and put it in this
JR new pickup.jpg

AND it sounds WAAAAAAAAAY better and can keep up with the Epiphone beastie----also the GM pups have adjustable screws not just slugs---

fresh strings and a good cleaning as well and the JR is now really realy READY TO RAWK!

---also (incase your wondering) FOOL disclosure-- though I PURCHASED a wiring harness--I didnt USE it I used the stock CIRCUIT BOARD-- because I wanted ONLY THE PICK UP to change --- and it transformed the whole guitar ---I liked it before I LOVE LOVE LOVE it now

Im posting this as a PURE service announcement--- SOME of us like to buy 50-80-200.00 pickups--- and that as all well and good -- but ---Im gonna tell you -- MANY of the foreign made "low end" pickups sound AMAZING-- and in back to back comps w/all things being equal they can outperform much more expensive models---

ALL OF THEM ???? -- no -- TBTH some suck--- some are "get what ya payu for-- some are "o.k." for the money

I can say though I have had GREAT success with
Guitarfetish
Guitarmadness
Guitarheadz
and
Music Lilly
Pickups on a regular basis and do not recall a single "stinker" in the bunch

I did have some crappy "Gretsch" copies and even the Guitarfetish Filtertrons really dont sound like GRETSCH pickups ----

ANYWAY -- I think all three sets of "gretsch" ones Ive tried totalled maybe 60.00....and they were used in flips or cast offs----so /.....

Guitar Madness pickups truly do rock.
Fantastic value, and stellar tone quality.
They have to be experienced to be believed. They're just that good.
I have them in several guitars now, and will be getting more as needed.
ME too-- they certainly worked to improve a Peavey Unity bass--("P" pups from Guitar Madness are AS GOOD as the Seymour Duncans I put in my "P" bass--under 20.00 VS 60.00--the difference isnt noticeable)
I am thinking this from music lilly MIGHT have to be tested in a Godin ............

Probably an Artec manufactured pickup as I think GM are.

what you didnt believe me??? lol

yep SLUGS--

and the GM pup sounds better--- I believe it is a 9 ohm w/ a ferrite magnet
VS the Alnico V 8.25 ohm

that .75 makes a HUGE difference
I believed you. I forgot about that model of P90S(S-for slug...not for “Sidewinder”). They were noted for not sounding like a true P90. The slugs were the magnets, much UNlike the bar magnets used in traditionally made P90 pickups. They were more of a Strat-like single coil....thinner, and brighter, sounding.
I’m not surprised that it would be put to shame by a traditionally fabricated version of a P90. :)

I've been looking at those Guitar Madness P/Us.

I have a 2011 Gibson SG Special (gloss). The guitar is great, but always recorded "dark". I recently downgraded to a Guitar Madness set: G.M. Zebra Hot Rod Humbucker Set Vintage 7.8k, Bridge 15k Alnico 5(4-wire) . They are fantastic, I am shocked actually. They brought the guitar to life, and brightened it quite a bit. Then I got rid of the pcb and put in 500K pots and everything is great! AND my Gibson pickups sound great (and bright) in an old Samick Super Strat HH that I have....so woods and everything in a guitar really makes all the difference. Note the plastic still on the pups in the pic, and the flash makes the guard look scratched bad....it's really not.

One does not adjust a dog-ear P-90

Adrian, does that mean that Gibson uses different variations of the P90 on their guitar? The (soap bar) P90 of my SG do have pole screws, and they do sound great.

Probably an Artec manufactured pickup as I think GM are.
AFAIK, Guitar Fetish pickups are also made by ARTEC. I have tried the double lipsticks - like them very much but they could be louder and a bit more agressive. Comparison against my Thunderbuckers made by David Barfuss (Thunderbuckers and Double lipsticks are internally nearly identical). Also tried their MM bass pickup. Found it OK, but the Harry Häussel MM style pickup is a lot better.
