We were scheduled for a battle of the bands. It’s our first ever show. We practiced hard for this.
Wow. I imagine WITH that singer back then you would have done real well too. Yea, it's a scary thought considering one has to front the whole project usually as the social rep for all, the story teller, the politician - band politics, interviews - answering properly and dodging as needed, not making a beef by slipping on something. There's working the crowd and moving and adjusting to environment, etc. Us guitarists, as my personality has always been for 35 years get to kinda hide behind our instruments. We get "attention" and love but don't have to really speak in any way if we don't want to. We can hide between sets and be sort of anonymous where as the singer's duty is to yuk it up with literally everyone. Man, that is not me in any way. Especially in a cover band - if a sullen original band is more offish it's fine because they define themselves that way to maybe be more aloof. This would be a break for a singer at least in regards to everything but the actual singing.
In a way, the guitarist gets the best of all worlds.
For sure I get that. (1) I don’t sing melody well enough to be a front man. Harmony. Bass. Different story. But I ain’t up front with every one staring at me. (2) same on guitar. I could never be the lead player. Same reason. Rhythm. Think Malcom Young. Stand in the back by the drummer. Inconspicuous. Of course at best, I’m only 10% what Malcom was….. but you get the point.
I get ya for sure. I'm more the Angus type, I think. And the reason is like I said to 'evil, whatever you do you don't have to be a social center point when it's over. Technically you could shake a few hands and go home after the show. Lol.
Yea, Malcomb is another personality type - they like to have fun but really are not comfortable with any attention. I see John Paul Jones like this also. To me it's more analogous to a trucker in that they do their thing but really don't want anything to do with anything other than what exactly it is they do.
I think musicians are a representation of their personality type and that's what chose their instrument more than anything. With that, I will never be a "singer" singer. The thought of everything involved just gives me anxiety. Lead guitar does not at all.
