Tube Swap - how would you do it?

A bit more detail of the tubes I'll test soon.

There's a place in the UK called Watford Valves who are quite well thought of, and I read up on their EL84 review - they seemed to notice big differences: https://www.watfordvalves.com/cgi-bin/documents/testreport_47.pdf

Here's their conclusion, I'm interested to see if the gap between the two tubes I bought and the JJ is as significant as they suggest.

Tube swap how would I do it? Not difficult I would just buy an SS amp, no switching tubes, oh, wait a minute, I did buy one.. :celebrate:

After many such posts from respected members, I bought a Marshall MG30 - utter shite. The THR10 sounded a lot better. I had a Marshall Origin too at the time, so had 3 options and the SS was so much worse than the others it never got played. It sounded so bad, I couldn't even sell it, wouldn't want somebody else to pay money for the utter shitest of the shite, so I simply gave it away (doubt the bloke I gave it to plays it...). I'm sure there are good ss amps out there, and I know there are good modelling amps out there - in my limited experience, the modellers are now a much better buy than a ss due to sound quality and ease of (decent) effects.

But, we will see, or more exactly - I will hear..., if there is any/much difference in swapping tubes. I'm happy with the amp sound, but like to play around, and like to get a bit of knowledge through experience too. If that knowledge is: tube swaps make no difference, then so be it - we will see...

Tube swaps will make a difference.
With the guidance of a great brother here Robert I was able to tame some fizz and harshness from my Dsl40c’s.
Thanks

DSLs are really nice amps, but to my ears have a fizz and glassy highs that at the very least need a greenback put in, and yeah, if you know what tubes to put in then that must help too. Actually, don't tell the others, but I reckon the tube swap will make a bigger difference than many folks think. But, we will see...

Speaker swaps are your next obsession. It can make a huge difference - almost like a totally different amp in some situations.

In the DSL5 and Origin 20 I had, they were much improved by a 10" Greenback. Once the cable I order for the amp to cab arrives, I'll check the 1x12 out again to see if I like the sound; if not then that'll get a Greenback.

OK, time to tube swap... I'll be back with results.

So, I started off, interesting, terrible disaster, damn irritating, stuck it back together to some extent, the problem makes sense, kinda solved, not solved, problem general area understood, have some decent sounds, at some stage it's gonna take loads of work to fix it, broke some stuff, only a bit, well maybe..., I hate guitars, amps, people and everything else, I suppose the sound I have now is good, the amp and all the bits were about to be smashed up and thrown in the bin a few hours ago..., I reckon I know why the amp has always been temperamental, although I have no actual idea. I should just buy a cheap solid state and make do with awful sounds.

Suffice to say, there's a problem.
