Tube Behavior - ECC823 Thread:

This mod sounds good

Still sounds like A$$ C19 mod

The general consensus is the C-19 mod is laregly done by bedroom players who never drive the amp. I think it is unnecessary...

I agree...your vintage amps are light years better...

Let's talk about V3/V4 tubes - in this case, in the DSL40C - and what kind of tone influence they might have????

Current setup was based on just what I had on hand:

V1 - JJ-ECC823
V2 - JJ-5751
V3 - JJ-ECC83-MG
V4 - 7025WA

Essentially, you could use the stock Marshall ECC83 tubes in V3 and V4. The JJ-ECC83-MG is a low gain 12AX7/ECC83 and the 7025WA is the same tube but a low noise variant.

In this configuration, I'm running gain at 6-7 on 'Lead 1' with Tone Shift 'In.'

The settings shown are what we are using for everything. It sounds great on Zeppelin's The Ocean and equally great on Judas Priest's Green Manalishi.
Thanks, Robert. I’ll see if I can try it this weekend. But it is NAMM weekend and I might be busy :D

Ok,

So the other night, we got together just to fiddle with a couple of songs and pieces of new gear. We played in the bassist's garage on 01/22/2019 and recorded the event. I cut out a few sections that I felt gave a good tonal representation of how my current rig sounds. You won't hear any stellar musicianship...and we didn't have our singer on hand, so the vocals are super-rough, but I think I was able to showcase the tone of the setup well enough you can get an idea of what it sounds like live and not direct out through a DAW like you hear on all my recordings.

The song excerpts you will hear on this clip are "The Ocean," "Green Manalishi" and "Diamonds & Rust."

Here's the setup:

Stock 2016 Gibson Les Paul (totally stock, 498T, no shielding, PCB in place) volume and tone knobs always full-up - bridge pickup only

2016 Gibson Les Paul 50's Tribute.jpg

Unmodified Marshall (as in no C-19 mod, clipped resistors, stock biased) DSL40C with 12" WGS Reaper (50 watt Custom) with 55 Hz cone

The amp is tubed as follows:

Pre-Amp

V1 - JJ-ECC823
V2 - JJ-5751
V3 - JJ-ECC83-MG
V4 - 7025WA

Power Amp

EL-34 Electro-Harmonix Russian Made

Amp settings as shown in the image below - These settings were never changed, even when the songs played changed. The only difference you hear is attack:

DSL40C Settings.jpg

Microphone used was Shure SM-57 placed as shown in lower right corner at edge of speaker frame:

DSL40C Microphone Placement.jpg

I'm running 30 feet of 'Easy-Lock' cable I bought new in 1988 (no joke) into my Korg Pitchblack Tuner. No effects used. NO effects added during mixdown.

Here's the clip. I edited out some stuff to try and get the best representation of my tone. Some of our banter was left in. Total length of the clip is 4:08

Just for fun...At 1:19 you will hear my speaking voice, "I screwed up on that on the intro part..."

At 1:36 I imitate Dr. McCoy from Star Trek and say "Damnit Jim!"

And a Beavis & Butthead grunt at 1:44 :-)

Thoughts???

That sounded damn good, Robert. I like heavy midrange as long as it doesn't make the higher frequencies harsh.

How's the clean side of the amp working for you?

Perfect! I only use it for certain things - like the "clean" chorus section of 'Perfect Strangers' - but it works well and the ECC823 doesn't seem to affect the 'green' side at all. (kinda what everyone was telling me)

I didn't play any solos that night, but even the solos sound nice and full. The tone compliments the bass.

Clarifying from a technical point of view, the phase inverter tube is always part of the power amp circuit. Sometimes only half of a triode type of tube is used for phase inverter duties, while the other half is doing pre-amp duties.
