totally unpopular opinions.

Unpopular (to me) opinion:
I had a guitar instructor that told me in order to play guitar I would have to detach from any emotion. The more I have thought about it, the more I disagree. Isn't music emotion you hear? I've listened to some of you on the forum. @heltershelton has sent clips that were so beautiful to listen to that it made me cry. @Session 5 sent me a clip of him singing & playing...same thing. If I'm in a bad mood or need high energy, @Ramo ,@Mitch Pearrow SJMP & @Clockworkmike have the perfect chugs for it. Thoughts?
Music without emotion?

What a freakin tool.

Singers too. Drummers.
Imagine these emotionless.

I have zero skill--- horrible technique-- no theory knowledge--- the only thing I HAVE IS EMOTION when playing...................If I detach that I might as well be crocheting!

Yeah i gotta disagree with the instructor here. I think emotion should be your priority #1 and the fun of doing it #2 ( but the joy of playing is emotion too, so these two are the same).

Depending on whatever mood you're in, it can bring out a different style, sound and approach. You can be upset or angry and it can make you just take out your frustrations on the guitar, giving this aggressive sound. You can be incredibly joyful and it can come out as something simply beautiful or downright upbeat and fun. You can be really sad and then create something melancholy but inspirational.

But i think playing with an emotion is essential. It inspires you. If you played without emotion, it just seems robotic and not open hearted.

Well, I'm ashamed to admit that I'm complete musical idiot. I learned to play in a hillbilly bar band in 1980. I made a living out of learning cover songs. I'm musically illiterate too.

I'm honestly blessed to be doing what I'm doing musically...
Me too my friend! I never had any lessons, never could get an instructor, never learned to read music. Closest i ever got was having my older brother show me 4 chords and how to change strings, then an uncle showed me one lead lick ( Highway to Hell) and a couple riffs like the openings to Crazy Train, Dont Fear The Reaper and Seasons of Wither.

Beyond that, i was left on my own to figure it out. So i COMPLETELY get where you come from!

The biggest discovery for me was the almighty power chord. How it could simplify things and how it unlocked so many songs. Of course i found out in time i wasnt playing them right , as most songs were using actual chords and open strings lol But it helped me figure out the progressions, the keys and the basic timing of songs.

Can you play smoke on the water?

I knew you were genius!
I used to pull that prank when someone would ask me to play something on a guitar. I'd go yeah i can play! And intentionally do the low E Smoke on Water, very clumsily. And then ask " Sounds good huh?!?!" They'd have a painful, embarrassed look and try to be polite. Then id go " Oh wait, like this" and then play it right lmao
