Unpopular (to me) opinion:
I had a guitar instructor that told me in order to play guitar I would have to detach from any emotion. The more I have thought about it, the more I disagree. Isn't music emotion you hear? I've listened to some of you on the forum. @heltershelton has sent clips that were so beautiful to listen to that it made me cry. @Session 5 sent me a clip of him singing & playing...same thing. If I'm in a bad mood or need high energy, @Ramo ,@Mitch Pearrow SJMP & @Clockworkmike have the perfect chugs for it. Thoughts?

That is the most unusual (unpopular) statement I have ever heard from a guitar teacher! BUT the wrong feelings could have an adverse effect. Performance anxiety needs to be handled, usually by getting used to performing publicly - I get anxiety from that stupid red light that says "record"!! Also, I am a high strung fellow and tempering my death grip on the neck has been something I have had to work on. I am still amazed how relaxed some player's hands are when performing.

As Bruce said: Emotional content is the key! And practice so much that you do not need to THINK about what you are playing -

Yeah, I wasn't sure where to post this. That makes a lot of sense. I do get really nervous playing in front of other people. Aside from that I'm not really a highly emotional person, outwardly anyhow. I'm def introverted. Playing always helps me release some of that. Thank you! :)

I think many performers have been shy or introverts that found their voice through their instrument and the stage. Hendrix comes to mind. Like speaking or writing, the more your "vocabulary" increases, the better one can express themselves and the more fulfilling the activity becomes. Boring practice turns into glorious music eventually. Another marital arts reference for this:

No doubt in my mind. I mean, I do think most of us started playing guitar and performing as an outlet and/or coping mechanism when we were younger.

Or the misfit so alone

Seems to me maybe what the teacher was trying to impart is that there comes a certain detachment as you get better at playing where you are no longer aware of the mechanics of the instrument and you are playing on learned instinct, and that's where you cross over from 'playing guitar' to 'making music.'
 
I dunno. Sounds bizarre to me. I have fun when I play, I run around, I smile, I attack it.... just plain enjoy playing for people. Take the emotion out??
